Phaedras
Apparently my car is pinging since I installed a 45K volt MSD coil and 8mm Accel wires. I had also installed NGK V-power plugs. I believe my ignition timing is standard, so why is my car running the best with 90+ octane gas? Will these simple Mods already create the need for higher octane gas? My mileage seems to be affected as well and has sunk even more now that I have to run Premium gas. Also, will advancing the ignition timing create the need for even HIGHER octane gas? Will I have to be running Shells super-Octane gas if I follow through with that?
WJM
a SPFI or NA MPFI subie will run on w/e fuel you put in it. IF you run the higher octane, advance the timing some to pick up the extra pep. its not much, but its there. Just run 87 in it. My DL didnt have any issues with either one, and actually ran better on the 87.
torxxx
it takes more energy to burn higher octane fuel thats why you have noticed a drop in fuel econ. Those mods shouldnt require higher octane fuel. I installed a Accel coil (45k volts) and 8 mm wires and I still run 87 octane fuel. retard your timing slightly and that will get rid of the pinging. you could have gotten a bad batch of gas. Up here in alaska, bad fuel happens all the time. I filled up with 90 octane one time at tersoro and I've never heard my motor ping so bad. Running higher octane fuel allows you to advance the timing some, but you get up too high and that craps gonna start detonating and you are gonna have major engine problems Next time you change your plugs, get bosch platniums. they outlast the ngk's by years.. Phaedras
Well you see, I can actually hear my engine running more smoothly with the higher octane fuel. The extra kick I feel when accelerating may be psychosomatic, but I would swear that it at least *sounds* better. I'm just hoping advancing the timing won't increase the need for higher Octane. Snowman
Run whatever fuel you want to. Throw in a bottle of Chevron fuel system cleaner for two tankfuls to clean everything out, then advance the timing 2 degrees at a time until you hear pinging, and back it off until it stops. You can also run plugs that are one heat-range colder if detonation is a problem. Often, that will help.
torxxx
dammit kelly, why do you always have better advice? I hear the engine pulling competition coming on faster and faster..
Ross
I had also installed NGK V-power plugs. Are you sure you got the correct heat range?
Phaedras
Are you sure you got the correct heat range? Mine are BPR6EY-11, the ones that the NGK website gave me. The plugs should be gapped around 48 to 50. I've never gapped plugs before, so I think they all variate by 0.02 or so. How can one determine pinging? I still have yet to develop the ears that can determine when it's occuring.
torxxx
you can feel it in the pedals, and hear it. it sounds like valves rattling really bad when you accellerate. you know when you shift from first to second and in second gear @ like 1200 rpms it sounds like its about to lug out? thats what pinging sounds like. another way to tell if you are too advanced is when you are starting the car, the engine will kickback on the starter.. it will crank a few revs, and then stop and it sounds like you bumped the key twice. that is when its way too advanced.
