Rebuilding EA82-T!

Hey guys, it's been a really long time since I have been on the forums and I'm really impressed with the progress on allot of the rides on here, including the 166AWP with stock turbo@15psi, thats pretty amazing.

 

 

I've got a little somthing i've been doing myself with my subaru, the turbo decided to blow up on me@30psi then hydrolocked my engine with oil and cracked a piston. So I've been rebuilding the engine from the bottom up myself at work in my spare time. It's comming along real nice, I have lots of pictures that I will post when its all done, I've also got a 2001 WRX TD04 Turbo to replace the weak VF4 so I shouldn't have another turbo issue.

 

The specs will be as follows :

 

OEM SUBARU GASKET KIT

OEM SUBARU ROD/MAIN Bearings

OEM SUBARU CHROME MOLY RINGS

OEM SPEC FORDGED PISTONS (all 4)

OEM SUBARU WATER PUMP

OEM SUBARU GEN3 OIL PUMP

Micropolished Crankshaft

Port and Polish Intake and Heads

Port Match and Gasket Match all Intake/Exhaust Ports

WRX Turbo Downpipe

Custom Header Pipe

WRX TD04 Turbocharger

WRX Intercooler w/Blowoff Valve

Custom Silicon Turbo Hoses

Heavy Duty Radiator

Dual Electric Fan Conversion

FULL 2.5" Custom Exhaust

 

The purpose of this project is to build a solid daily driver that has reliability but is still fast enough to play :) I've allready got the whole bottom end assembled and the short block is done and ready to go, now I'm workin on the top end.

plus a blow off valve helps between shifts to keep the turbo spooled.
A by-pass valve does this better! It does the same as a blow off valve, in that it releases the post turbo inlet pressure, but instead of venting it to the atmosphere, it runs it back into the inlet before the turbo. This helps the turbo maintain its speed, while also not confusing your computer.

I was referring to the WRX setup's and modern day turbo cars, since all my turbo stuff is comming off a WRX, and they use Stock Recirc Valves on the intercooler.

 

The intercooler I got for $75 didnt have this on it so I needed somthing, and the smoking deal for $180 for a HKS SSQV (reg. $300) was too good to pass up, its allmost new. Plus I love the sound and it helps turbo spool compared to the stock recirc valve that stalls the turbo between shifts.

 

The EA81/82T's did not have any type of bypass or recirc valves since the turbo's were so small.

I wasn't aware that they have a recirc/bypass valve.... I'm really only familiar with ea81ts, so ill shut up :)
I think he's referring to the recirc valve that is stock with the WRX IC.. Because you are right, there isn't one on an EA82T.. Then again, he also said he has a VF4, and a TD04 from a 2001 WRX (which in itself is possible if its JDM)..

So who knows.

Could you explain just how a stock recirc valve could 'stall' the turbo?

 

Also.. where did you come up with 'OEM FORGED PISTONS'?

Ahhhhh, Turbocharged Brat!!!!:slobber:

 

Anyway, hope you have a lot of fun with your build. There are numerous people who are building up EA82T's(including myself). So let us know of your progress. It is always good to hear a fellow Subie owner putting their nose to the grindstone and doing something awesome.

 

As far as the factory bypass valve goes, it won't stall the turbo, so don't worry yourself about it. The factory bypass valve is made to leak a little at certain rpms, which allows additional air a shortcut to get into the engine, instead of having to pass through an idling turbo(which actually causes a restriction of sorts), but it will not stall the turbocharger. The HKS BOV is nice, but you really need to invest the extra cash in the recirculation kit that is made for them. Unless you are going catless, it is a bad idea to vent to atmosphere. By doing this(venting instead of recirculating), you are causing the engine to run excessively rich between shifts, as the MAF has already metered the air and the ecu has added the fuel accordingly. Only in this case the air that would have normally reached the cylinders, is now being released out of the intake system which now leaves extra fuel with no air to mix with it. And if you are running a cat, it will kill it pretty darn quick. So if you plan on running a cat, get the recirculation kit.

with my build up, i am trying for atleast 200 p at the wheels, but thats quite a ways down the road. i still need to source all the parts ill be putting into it as well as get the engine and heads machined and the such.

 

whats everyone else putting their built engines into?

Mine is staying in the GL-10 Wagon. I am trying to get all my ideas together and make a parts list of what I want to put into this project. But I'll let everyone know as soon as I start sourcing parts for my project. I plan on buying a new motor(or two) and having some major mods made to it or them. I'll have to keep in touch with everyone as I'm going to be in Okinawa for the next 4 years. I plan on doing a lot of junkyard hopping while I'm there, not to mention the countless performance shops that they have. So if anyone wants anything, I'll do my best to locate, acquire, and ship them.

The pistons I ordered are Fordged but are OEM SIZE AND SPEC.

 

 

Yeah We'll see what happens with the blowoff valve, the guy I'm getting it from has it on his 05' WRX and he hasn't had any problems, if it doesnt work out for me I can allways change it and I'm sure I can get somone else to buy it. I got lots of pictures I'll post for you guys of the progress.
