archemitis
i just pulled this filter off o my er27. the damn thing tried to eat itself. the metal pulled away from the body, and was circulating unfiltered oil through my engine. it is a tough guard. it is the second time a fram has done this to me. my friend had a 300z motor suck all of the guts out, and cram his lower end with paper! in short fram sucks. alot. this wasnt user error, or anything of the sort, just a horrrible filter.. use purolator, or subaru! About ten years ago the exact same thing happened to my buddy with a Fram filter on a 305 in a Firebird. For about the same legnth of time I've been using Wix filters and have had pretty good luck with them, also good luck with Puralator, too. Sorry to see that, hopefully nothing was too badly affected. mudduck
I have always used fram filters, but after seeing that picture and hearing a few bad stories about them lately, I'm gfoing to go with somthing else.
spanky_pete
My turbo wagon had one of those on it when I got it. It was crushed where they had used a strap wrench on it. But the really funny part was the crush washer that goes on the drain plug had been put on the inside of filter instead. Napa gold filters are the only kind I use. Been using them for years on all my rigs and have never had a single problem.

JWX
fram as been crap for years, its a quality control thing. but if you change it out at 3K, I don't really see this happening. how many miles were on the filter I use wix filters
86subaru
so i guess the case of wix filters i got off ebay for 20 bucks was a good buy , 12 in a case , w shipping 2.00 ea
rallyruss
fram wastes all the funds on advertising and makes up for it by putting out a crappy proudut. my fatherinlaw insists on using them because they are cheap. drives me crazy. yeah there is no question that fram is junk. just cut one open and see how its made compared to a wix or other Quality filter. 85Sub4WD
I used one fram filter once on my car years ago (no bad results that time), since then I have use Puralator Premium Plus or Pure One. Purlator filters are actually made in my home state (NC) not too far from where I live I know the guy who spec'd the oils used for the can-making machinery (and the rest of the plant for that matter!) he retired from Mobil Oil about two years ago! stephenw22
Are there any good filters with synthetic media? When I worked for Detroit Diesel back in tha' day, they made them for their Series 60 engines, and they were WAY better than conventional (paper media) filters. It trapped particles down to 1 micron instead of the usual 10 microns. They did some studies and it showed that there was a significant drop in wear (at least on a new engine) vs. using a conventional filter. As far as which brands are best, it seems like you just get what you pay for. The low-cost filters are cheap for a reason. Most are made by only a few manufacturers anyways, and just re-branded. Wix made them for a while but they did not sell well due to the price so they droped the line. they were sold as "sport truck" filters. yeah sweet82 penzoil is crap as is the filters they sell. I belive they are just a Fram in a yellow can.
jimbo747
I've been using Fram filters for years, but after reading some of these (and other) horror stories, I've decided to switch. I've heard a lot of good things about the NAPA Gold filter. Does anyone have any thoughts about the NAPA Silver? (apparently both mfg by WIX) Cheers! Hodaka Rider
Never ceases to amaze me how many 'automotive enthusiasts' still use crap filters like Fram. There's enough info out there on the net that you'd think they would know better. Of course, that's what I used to use too. But that was before the internet!
