please never use fram oil filters again! (pics)

Recommended Posts

I have never used a fram filter unless im putting atf fluid in my oil to breakdown deposits, were oil filter quality isnt a priority. I have only used OEM subaru filters, and wix filters, I switched to wix just after learning that Casite and Hastings were bought out by champion, both casite and hastings use fiber type element material, instead of paper, it filters way better thatn paper, but wix is cheaper and thats what my dad has been using on all his big rig trucks for like 25 years, not to mention my girlfriends stepdad races a corvette and always changes his oil with castrol syntec 5w-50 and wix filters.

Fram has always been on the expensive side of things for me. I'm a cheap bastard.. currently I've got one of the Advance Auto Tough Grip filters on the Ru, the big red one thats "covered with sandpaper". On the box it said it was made by Wix, so I guess I'm still safe. Either way, I still change on a regular basis, so I guess I'll live regardless.

slander! =]

Personal opinion only. I avoid Fram like the plague. Glue and cardboard construction. Worthless anti-drainback valve.

I've been using Super Tech filters at Wally World. $2 bucks each. Re-badged Champions. Steel construction. USA made. Best deal in town. Never had a problem with them or the Super Tech oil. ($4.88 for 5 quarts.)

You gotta love a $6.25 D.I.Y. oil and filter change.

Brand loyality, over-spending and anal retentiveness with regard to engine oil and filters rarely pays off during the average lifespan of a Subaru. Use what ever is cheapest (except a Fram.) Change it every 3 to 5k and don't sweat it.

dyno oil is dyno oil as far as im concerned. theres gotta be a reason that mobil, makes the cheapest real name brand oil, and mobil1.

that walmart oil is most likely a rebadged oil, who knows maybe its mobil.

Not to change the subject, but does anyone have any thoughts on Purolator filters? I have used them in the past and never had a problem. They seemed to be pretty good filters. I was just wondering.

I have used purolator filters for years and so have most of the people I know - never had a problem nor heard of one. Sometimes cheaper than Fram to boot! The only other ones I would consiter using are WIX and Mobil 1. - They are VERY high quality, but expensive.

As a side note (not trying to hijack the thread) the "Super Tech" oil at my local Walmart has a tiny "WPP" (Warren Performance Packaging AKA Warren Distribution) on the bottom of the bottle. This is the old Warren Oil Company in business since 1922. I use this stuff with total confidence. It carries a "SL /SM" rating. When you use name brand dino oil, you're paying for TV commercials.

i just pulled this filter off o my er27. the damn thing tried to eat itself. the metal pulled away from the body, and was circulating unfiltered oil through my engine.

it is a tough guard. it is the second time a fram has done this to me. my friend had a 300z motor suck all of the guts out, and cram his lower end with paper!

in short fram sucks. alot. this wasnt user error, or anything of the sort, just a horrrible filter..

use purolator, or subaru!

I have had good luck with the filters from Wal-Wart, Supertech ST3682 fits EA82, and it fits EA81 just fine though, it doesn't specifically say so in the book at the store, I think they are made by Purolator-best part:price $2.07, Napa fiters are good too, and they told me they are made by Wix, I never liked Fram, but I have had to use them when nothing else was availiable, they

don't seem to keep the oil clean for very long either.
