Duoglide
Hello everybody, New to the forum and look forward to hearing from you. My wife's 2001 4 cylinder:-( Outback emits a faint burning rubber smell from the passenger-side engine compartment. Checked the belts and hoses and they look fine as far as I can tell. The tires look fine and I don't think she knows how to get all four to break loose:-) It's more of a nuisance than anything, but wanted to run it by you before it turns for the worse. Thanks in advance, Steve

Thanks in advance, Steve Wonder if it may be burning oil you are smelling... At least to me, they are kinda close in smell... Reason I am wondering, on our 01 OBW the passenger side valve cover gasket is leaking. It is leaking onto the Spark Plug wires on that side. Wonder if the hot oil is causing the rebber plug wires to heat up a bit... Easy way to tell if it's leaking is to pull the spark plug wires and see if they're oily. Keep posted with results... BTW: Welcome aboard the board...
sea#3
Check the inner C/V 's on the trany they are probably leaking grease on to the exhaust . There is an updated grease that goes in the C/V's , they need to be pulled out cleaned and repacked SEA#

Lesbaru
Mine has done that since I got new cats. Theory is that the new cats keep down the usual stink, but don't pull out the sulphur, so the only smell that remains is the burning rubber/sulphurish smell. Either that or my car is about to explode....
