gizmo
Hi to everyone. Glad to have found this site. Having a problem with 1993 subaru legacy wagon starting. Sometimes the starter just clickes , like its not engageing into flywheel. If you keep clicking the ignition key it will start. The battery test ok. Had a new starter put on and it does the same thing. Is there a starter relay on it. I can not figure out where its at. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
frag
Where does this click come from? Really from the starter (under the hood) or somewhere under the dash. If you can confirm it's coming from the starter itself, then your «new» starter has a solenoid problem ; if under the dash then it's the starter relay. There is one in my 96 Brighton, 2.2L. I suppose there is also one on yours but not absolutely certain. Manual or auto? If manual, start from the clutch, There's a starter defeat switch at the top of the clutch pedal stem, start from there the wire will lead you to the relay. I know nothing about how it works on an auto trans. Good luck!
forester2002s
Could be a number of things, but I would check battery terminals first. Make sure that the +ve and ground battery clamps are clean and tight. I have had experience with old cars where this connection gets corroded and you lose electrical continuity. There may be enough of a connection to give 12V to accessories, including the starter relay; but the 12V disappears when trying to draw a high current through the starter motor. This is an easy check, so I would do it first.
Legacy777
It's probably the starter solenoid contacts. Check the battery connections and everything to make sure they're good first.
gizmo
The clicking comes from the starter. Its an automatic. The battery terminals were coroded and i put new ones on , because i thought that what was wrong. Its not my car and i cant the girl to stop long enough to look at it. Maybe if i went to walmart i could work on it. LOL Im going to get my tester out and go over it again . Thanks for your help. Ill check back shes having more problems than that . The transfer clutch was banging when she went Left or right. I read in one the forums that if you went around slowly right and left it would free it up. It worked ,now i wonder how long it will last? Subarus are tough. We drove to Florida and back to Ohio with it banging. Pulling a Uhaul
