spider intake throttle body question

ok..so why is there a coolant line running through the bottom of the throttle body a spider intake? also is it ok that I have the drivers side tube blocked off ( where "i believe" it should be going to a t-fitting into another coolant line) there is a line coming from the lower part of the spider to the TB..

 

 

also the 2 little vacume nipples on the top of the TB...exact purpose? i have them looped into each other...

 

keep in mind the vacume hard lines and egr crap are removed from the intake manifold

yeah i know what you mean it got by me when i pulled the spider from an xt didnt expect it there. i guess the reason coolant goes to the TB is to prevent icing of the throttle body in cold weather? maybe you should bypass it for turboing purposes

ok. the one i have is non turbo mpfi. how different is the turbo piping to the TB. is there any mix of other stock parts i can use to put a turbo with the spider?

 

is yours stock or custom? got a pic? sorry to jack the post:cool:

miles, you were right the first time. The reason behind the collant line running through the TB is to prevent icing in the TB. A lot of people that I know on different forums like my 3 generation Camaro/Firebird forum just bypass it since it has no function unless its like in Alaska or someplace REALLY cold (hmm maybe like here?) Just bypass it and it should help give a little bit of performance since the hot coolant heats up the air going into the motor thus bringing the temp of the air up giving you less performance...:rolleyes:

I'm not sure why there is coolant running through the TB, probably a warm up and/or emmisions system. I doubt this was the problem with the wagon after the swap but it occured to me that perhaps, and this a really big, grasping at straws, perhaps, not having that circulation of coolantcould cause the situation you where having, ie starts and runs when cold, once warm, won't run well or start back up. I can imagine some situation where, without the circulation, air bubbles (not good for cooling) develop in the spider's water pipe and make the temp sensor on the back read "way to freaking hot" thus sending some signal to the ECU that in order to save itself, it should not allow the engine to run.......

 

Again, that was a stretch but perhaps, just maybe, a possibity, (maybe)

 

When I got my COMPLETE spider intake in included a hard coolant line that goes from the water pump to the heater core (IIRC), this is where the driver's side TB coolant line ties in. The standard intake turbo manifold had a pipe just like this without the provission for t-ing the TB coolant line in.....

 

If you want to get it set up "properly" you could probably do some hardware store Brass T and hose barb fittings to plump that TB line into the heater core line....

 

MegaSquirt would be really handy here because it would tell you the temp that the ECU is getting (which can be different than what the dash guage shows (unless it is mechanical and located really close to the ECUs temp guage.....

wel on most other cars a heated throttle body is to help with emmisions and help the car warm up faster

 

since there is no fuel running in a mpfi injected type of throttle body then icing as far as i know of is not a problem

yes this would make sense for spfi or tbi systems, but the spider intake has the injectors near the heads

It seems like it is there for a reason so I'd think having it blocked off could cause some problems (maybe)

 

As for the two vacuum nipples on top provide ported vacuum, on my set up one provides the vacuum to the disty the other has a cap on it.

 

Where is your disty getting vacuum? of the pass side of the manifold?

no vacuum advance on his dist

it's a crank angle sensor type

 

all timing aside from static is controlled by the ECU

 

 

the vacuum ports could have been for the erg solenoid and the canister purge solenoid

 

 

the coolant pipe MAY be feeding coolant from

one head to the other.

 

Could be part of some parallel system.

 

you would be wise to be

careful with that pass side head and cooling issues
