How much is a 87-88 GL-10 4dr with a smoked motor worth? I mean the kid got it so hot, the timing covers melted. The mechanic friend said he couldn't even pull the head bolts with an IR 625lbs air gun. The interier is nice but the body is rusted. AWD 5sp.

I'd say between $150-$300. My GL-10 was rusted badly in a couple areas and had a fairly new motor, decent interior(digital dash), blown cv axle, smoked clutch, crappy paint, and I paid $500. So, I would haggle with the guy and see how low you could get him talked down to.

I'd be real careful if it's got the typical midwest road salt rust.

If that's the case, your talking "parts car". Probably in the $100-200 range tops.

if the car otherwise in good shape its worth getting, having died from overheat, you know at least the mpfi works and the turbo is still good. the heads may be salvageable and you could find another motor

 

i would say if you get it for cheap then its worth a project

Well mine came from good ol' Missouri and ya know that they believe in road salt there. But I went through all the trouble of getting rid of the rust and patching the holes. Then painstakingly going through and undercoating the whole underside of the car.

Heck yeah! If it was hot enough to make the bolts seize, then I think it is safe to stick a fork in it 'cause it's done!

 

To add onto what Miles said, you could always get another motor from this one place called John's Foreign Engines out of Washington State(If I remember correctly). This pace constantly has ads on eBaymotors for EA82Ts for like $895 buy it now. As long as the heads are still good, you could send them off to the machine shop and get them ported or something along those lines. It's at least worth thinking about.

if the heads turn out to be good you can get away with using a carb'd block if you keep everything stock.

 

if you go modded an intercooler would be the first thing you would want

We are talking about a Michigan car here.

I'm looking at it as a parts car. I haven't looked underneath the car yet(to much snow), but by the looks of the skin, I'd say its preaty much gone.

I've got a ea82 carb engine with a bad head. If the heads are workable, maybe I can put togeather a nice little motor for my Brat.
