ignition problem need help ASAP

Recommended Posts

I had the swiched 12v power for all my gauges tied to the positive side of the coil. the power wire shorted out and blew the fuse i unhooked the wire for my gauges and replaced the fuse i then had power at the coil but i wasn't getting a refrance pulse from the ditsy so i assumed that it fried the ditsy as well so i swaped one in i knew was good and still no pulse.

please help

Thanks

Stan

Have you checked for power through the coil, on the minus side? You should see near 12v there also if the coil is ok.

yes

i have taken two years of automotive tech and my teacher for mostof it was a subaru tech for like 15 years so i do know a little about checking the coil.

if it makes you feel anybetter my 83 4x4 wagon has tried three coils, two distributors, new cap/rotor, plugs, wires and still nothing!!! no spark comming out of the coil. the only thing i haven't tryed( which i'll be doing tomorrow) is taking a voltometer to every connection in the system. i sure hope i find the problem too, it's been two weeks and i don't want to ride the bus anymore.

When I converted to SPFI, I did not properly ground my control unit, and fried it. These control units seem to be pretty tempermental.

If you don't have the FSM for your car, here's the link:

yes, I know it's for a 1989, but it should be close enough to test your CAS and your computer

(I tried 3 CAS, and fried 2 computers before I found the problem!!!)

good luck!!

We don't know what the automobile repair knowledge of most of the posters is here but now we know what yours is. You didn't state in your previous posts what part of the coil you checked so we need to know exactly how things were tested in order to find the answer to the problem on this. We are not trying to test your knowledge when we ask questions.

Since there is 12v at the minus side of the coil and no signal pulsing there while cranking the engine then you know that the pickup loop is not working for some reason. If the wire between the distributor and pickup in the distributor is ok then perhaps if you have the style of ignition system that uses the transistor switch in the pickup loop circuit it may have been damaged when things shorted. Does your system use that?

I believe the answer to your problem has been presented by 84Sub and by Glen

you either do not have the coil bracket grounded

or

you have fried the ignition amplifier,

this power transistor is mounted on the coil bracket under the coil.

The signal from the ECU is very small and this amplifier brings it up to a level capable of firing the coil.
