tscinmd
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one. Just found out that the subaru i bought has a dead piston. I have 4 options I'm looking at. 1. Rebuild 2. Find a rebuilt ea71 to put in it. 3. Replace the ea 71 with an ea 81 4. Sell the car. The body is in great shape . no rust. Everything else works great. Getting psi in the 90's with the three other pistons and 0 on the other one. Its an 80 DL 1600 Hatch 4wd .... what you you guys do?
Syonyk
1. Rebuild Or at least pull it apart & see what the problem is. It could be nothing more than a sticking valve. -=Russ=-
tscinmd
That is true ... would a sticking valve cause blowby?

Skip
some tin's phishy Why didn't the mechanic who diagnosed this perform a leak down test? That is one B-U-Tit-Full Hatch. Ya can't beat Shawn's offer shipping might be more than the cost of the lump. then sounds like you will have to pay to have it installed. clutch and pp ect you puttin' away a grand to finish this project? what will it be worth to you when your are done? tscinmd
I'm going to get a second opinion on it before I do anything really ... just checking into my options. It hasn't cost me anything yet. I've had friends look at it.
Skip
TS, You did ask -- what's next? I guess what I am trying to say is the phrase "Dead Piston" Is a bit nebulous. 0 psi could mean several things but the only way I know to come up with a bagel in the comp test is 1) a valve hung wide open 2) a big hole in the piston Both of which are rare. #2 would cause blowby of the 10th degree So much it could blow seals out of the block If you removed the oil fill cap (I see it's been replaced) the "huffin' " coming out would astound you. Please request a leak down test. Then you will know where the problem lies. As I said very nice car, good luck.
tscinmd
Yes, the sound is very noticeable comming out of the filler cap. I'll see if we can do a leakdown before i take it to the second mechanic.
