What do I need to convert legacys trannys

Recommended Posts

I have a 90 legacy auto tranny which is bad. I found a tranny for a 98 legacy. What would I need to mod to make this tranny work in the 90? I know I'll have to replace the rear diff cuz the 90 has a 4.11 gear ratio. Maybe the computer also? Please help and let me know if this is even possible.

Thanks,

if your going from 2wd to AWD tranny you'll need the tcu and all wires, and maybe the ecu also, i have no evidence to back that up tho, they will both bolt up however, as you said different rear diffs and maybe have to swap out the whole driveline, and maybe, just maybe, you might have to lengthen or shorten it, dont know about wheelbases for those cars being the same and all. thats all i can tell ya man.

Simple answer is.....you can't.

In 96 subaru introduced the phase 2 4eat tranny. It added a few more features, sensors, and other gadgetry. The connector plugs changed as well.

So despite the fact it will physically bolt up, you'll run into issues with the connectors. I suppose if you were really ambitious you could rewire the connector and match as many of pin outs as you can with the old setup. It would "probably" work ok.....however this a completely wild rump roast guess.

but can you swap the awd drivetrain out of a 98 legacy sedan and through it into a 95 legacy sedan, the 95 has no awd drivetrain. ill have to swap the tcu, maybe the ecu, and all the wires that go from tcu--->ecu right, and of course the rear end driveline, and all that stuff.......or would it be easier to through the drivetrain out of a 90 legacy wagon with 5MT Fulltime 4wd into the 95 legacy with no awd. out ona limb i know.

Hey I dropped you a pm as well....

This swap CAN BE DONE .......I'VE DONE IT.......

The Only difference I came across is the fact that the 96 and Newer trans Will have an electronic speed sensor at the trans for speedometer.....on the older trans it is 100% mechanical....

To do this swap Pull the speed sensor and Just stuff your factory mechanical speedo in the same location.....

You may also need to use your stock trans mounts .....I think there was a slight change there as well, but the 2 or 3 different generations of Trannys will interchange......

I went to my Local Dealer and verified there is NO CHANGE in the PIN LOCATIONS between trannies.....

I did a 97 Legacy Wagon trans into a 91 Sedan......

Hope this clears things for folks..... ;)

John....
