Anyone ever tried making this on a soob?

here is a great article on four-link suspension making.

part 1 http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/suspension/131_0306_link/

part 2 http://4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/suspension/131_0307_link/index2.html

This seems to offer great articulation and travel for a solid axle truck.

(THIS IS ALL THEORETICAL, DO NOT CONSIDER THIS A HOW-TO.) ;)

So for a independent set up a subframe could be make to mount the diff and connect it to the wheel housing with semi-rigid metal. (Like a leaf spring) this would essentially make the rear almost like a solid axle. The rear diff would move with the bumps and then on extreme movements that axle could move up and down.

You may have to beef up the springs to compensate for holding up the diff.

Like I said this is a theory and I lack the expertise to fabricate something like this. I would like to see if it could be done so when I do get the skills/tools I can attempt it.

I've often thought about the same thing....

I have some radical ideas on how to do it but never attempted it yet.

The basic premise being...

If you could loosen up the rear you could leave the front alone and let the rear wheels flex for the front???

This would allow the weight (which is up front anyway) to stay on the ground during articulation, without messing with the front.

With out giving up too much of my idea, here is a hint...

...if you tilt the diff you avoid some CV problems....

(treat the diff like a solid axle???)

Glenn,

82 SubaruHummer--may someday have radical rear end travel??? Some day ;)

01 Forester--no travel.

well the whole rear end is weak as heck anyways, so if anything radical is to be done, I would think about using an r180 and longside axleshafts from the front of a nissan 720 PU in the back. Then make custom a-arms and use the nissan outer hubs with their disc brakes and manual hubs :brow: (weld the diff, and disconnect the rear in 10sec for the street)
