regularman
Like I needed another one. I just bought a 1989 Subaru RX from my nephew. It has all the bells and wistles and the body and interior are in great shape. Its an automatic. I got it cheap because the motor has blown 3 head gaskets on the passenger side and has other issues(threads for head bolts stripped out, etc.). Right now I have a 1982 GL wagon with the EA81 in it and it runs decent but the body is rusting apart. I plan on taking the ea81 out of the wagon and going through it a bit and then sticking it in the RX. My questions are many, but from some that I asked earlier the job can be done. How much horsepower will be lost going from a turbo ea82 to a carbureted Ea81? I just want the car to drive, not to race around in. Will it still do ok on gas? The old wagon is a 4 speed and its not real good on gas. Anyways this is my plan. Any advise? I don't want to put a lot of money into this car, but I would like to keep a subaru 4x4 as nothing compares to one in winter driving.
Flowmastered87GL
Well the RX has around 115 HP and I think the EA81 is around 76 HP or so (depending on model/application) So you would be losing about 39 HP But 76 healthy horses are better than 115 sick ones I am sure there are some nay-sayers that will say dont carb an RX... I say its your car, do what you want to it regardless of its classic nature. Anything is better than sending it out for scrap.

MilesFox
yes the swap can be done, you will have all the parts needed between both cars the is the parts car an AT or MT? you will have to swap over the fuel pump from the parts car, to go with the carb you may have to swap some of the wiring and the ecu for the carburetor to run the egr and purge solenoid, although you can get the carb to run allrighe without it i have an 87 rx that has a carbureted ea82, what you are doing will be the same involved as in my car, except you will be using the ea81
torxxx
nah dont do that.. get a carb'd shortblock with turbo heads and you have a good turbo motor for that RX... don't ruin it by under powering it. a ea81 automatic would drive like a dump truck

mcbrat
if you put in the ea81, you can put a weber 32/36 carb on it to help out the power loss. my 87 wagon runs really well with a ea81 and weber....
MilesFox
ok if the parts car is MT and you are using the AT, you need to find an ea81 flexplate with bolts. it will fit the ea82 torque converter just fine

Is this a common carb? I mean I used to be into the Ford Pinto business years ago and I have a bunch of those old webber carbs.

So is flexplate the proper name for this then? I have to go junk yarding then. Anything else I should pick up while I'm out there.? I am gonna scrap the old wagon, but before I do I will keep the transaxle and rearend and axle shafts(those aren't that old on the front). I live in the Southeast in the mountains of NC so if anybody needs some old wagon parts, let me know. I'll end up keeping a bunch of ************ I will never use. I always do, but I have to quit collecting cars. I have an MG and a Kia sportage already torn apart in my garage LOL.
SkankinPickle
Is this a common carb? I mean I used to be into the Ford Pinto business years ago and I have a bunch of those old webber carbs. dude, you should ask in the marketplace, if you want to sell them. all you need is an adapter plate to make them fit on any subaru's intake manifold. (you can buy the adapter plate from redline, webber, or from a place called bow-wow/autovice out here in the PNW; don't know about eastcoast though) here's some useful links: http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~camncath/weber_to_subaru.htm http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~camncath/retrofitting_the_weber_dgav_32.htm http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29778
