Roobaflu
sorry if this double posts , it seems the last one disappeared. anyway, I have an 85 2wd auto hatch ea81 putting in an 85 5speed dual range ea82 going to use the clutch, flywheel from the ea82 on the ea81 engine, got the tranny mount, pedal box and cable figured out, got the ea81 manual tranny flywheel bolts my confusion now is axles, I know the ea82 axles are too long, but will the ez81 DOJs fit the ea82 tranny? and if I get new axles, do I get ones for 2wd since the front end is from a 2wd car, or do I get 4wd because its a 4wd tranny? I'll save the questions for the rear end swap for later thanks everybody
torxxx
it dont matter on the front of a ea82 axles except for turbo'd axles (25 spline)they are all the same length and spline 2wd and 4wd except for 3AT turbo tranny is 25 splines but other then that I know auto ea81 rear axles are the same as a manual axle for sure.. the brats rollin like that. Miles where are you? he knows the answer to this post.. hopefully he'll chime in and help me out here...

I'll save the questions for the rear end swap for later thanks everybody as long as your 85 D/R tranny isn't from a turbo, you will be fine with ea81 axles. (all ea81's are interchangeable though the turbo and 4wd oneswere thicker) if it's a turbo tranny (3.70) you'll need tomake/buy custom axles (several on the board have done it) for the rear you need to have ea81 axles. all 80's rear diffs are interchangeable as long as you have the ratio to match the tranny you may want to pick up some 4WD ea81 adjustable front struts too for a bit more ride height. Roobaflu
any other flywheels I can use? the one off the tranny is toast, rusted REALLY bad with VERY deep pits in it, way too bad to have it turned. I can't use the one off my engine because I dont have one, LOL, got a flex plate that wont do me any good though
calebz
YOu have to use one that matches your motor. If you have an EA81, you must use an EA81 flywheel.
Roobaflu
theres a write up in the USRM that says for putting an ea82 DR 5 speed into an ea81 that you put the ea82 flywheel on the ea81 engine now I'm confused :\
MilesFox
ok, torxx the turbo 3at is 23 splines. you were wrong on the spline cound but i can say you are correct if i enlighten you on this: the 3at turbo is the only 23 spline axle with teh fatter diameter doj that would fit on a 25 spline axle so on this note turbo 3at dojs can be used to convert 25 spline axles to 23 splines caleb a ea82 flywheel will fit on an ea81, just the bolys are skinnier, but the flywheel still cnters on the crank snout, and torques down the same. the only thing is the timing marks will be different. vincent the axles in the hath will fit the dual range. are you still doing the ea82 conversion, or just doing the tranny for now till you figure out the strut caps. hey if you got the pedal box and cable figured out then you are good to go!! i think somewhere in the stash is an ea81 flywheel, but it was from a 2wd so it wont work i have a whole flywheel, clutch,pp from an xt you can use it, newer disc. as long as you have the bolts its all good. dont forget to grind away the bottom of the engine bellhousing to clear the starter teeth. make a note of the ea81 timing mark from the flexplate to the ea82 by matching the flywheel bolt pattern so you can scribe the ea81 mark on the ea82 flywheel im off monday till 9 pm so i can come by and give you a hand anyway about the rear axles ea82's are too long, but you can build the ea81 axle shafts with the ea82 doj and bearings, so long as you have good axle boots. i will tell you now it will be a waste to build the axles if you dont get good boots, as they wont last a week the first time they see mud. from what i have seen i would think that the ea81 and ea82 rear axle boots will be the same, as well as the same for the inner front axle boot for non turbo axles
