charm
So, just curious if anybody knows the costs of a few pieces that some SOB damaged when he broke into my '97 Impreza. All he took was my stereo system and my leatherman, he took nothing else. I know the cost of the stereo equipment components (or at least their current equivelents) but I have no idea what the value of the plastic bits and pieces is. Basically, he damaged everything on the piece of plastic between the armrest part of the center console and the dash. This would include the piece of plastic itself, the trim around it, the cup holder is gone as is the frame for the stereo. He did leave the plastic pockets and the cigarette lighter socket and the bezelle around the shifter. I think he also took the blank piece at the bottom. Also, how did this guy get into my car? No windows were broken and I am 110% positive that I had locked the car the night before...all windows were up (the passenger door and tailgate were wide open). Finally, for you car stereo geeks out there, if you had an insurance check coming, what gear would you put in you car? I'll be getting a new deck, amp, and sub w/ enclosure. northguy
You can go to the dealer and get the cost of new replacement parts and the cost of a mechanic to install them for you. Submit that to the insurance agent and then do some J/Y diving and put it back together yourself with an upgraded security system in it. I received an e-mail the other day talking about someone being able to take your vin # off the dash and have the dealer cut a key for your car without proof of ownership. The remedy, said the e-mail, was to drop a 3 x 5 card or a piece of black plastic tape over the vin #.
Cougar
There are ways to open the door locks without having a key. You should take the car into the dealer and have them give you an estimate of repair or your insurance company will direct you where they want the estimate done. There is a lot stereo gear to choose from on the market and I would check out some places that sell the gear so you can listen for yourself what you would like to put in the car. You may also want to think about adding an alarm system since you will be making it more attractive for another breakin.
Guest scubabike420
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. My '95 legacy was broken into last fall. Most of the plastic trim pieces are inexpensive, but they do add up. I ended up going to a dealer and a helpful parts guy came out and generated a list of items with prices. As for getting into the car, check all the rubber around the windows. Your looking for a spot where someone slid in a coat hanger. My thief used a screw driver to pull the window away from the door frame and then just pulled on the window until it broke. Be thankful they didn't break the window. I'm still finding glass. swi66
A few years ago my son luckily had comp on his car, and had submitted a description of his stereo system to his insurance company. Eniough damage to his Lebaron was done between the dash, side window, trunk lid and quarter panel(his amp was in the trunk, they tried opening it with a tire iron) to "total" the car. It was a $500 car, with $1800 damage. Stereo was another $500, cd's were not covered. He settled for $2000..........bought a better car. Dash was a total mess! swi66
charm
I enjoy the fact that my high end CD player uses a CD key. Anytime the power is disconnected and specifc CD must be placed in the CD player before it will turn on. So, the $400- CD player that they tore from my dash, is now a paper weight. And the mental image of some moron running down the street at 3am in a high end neighborhood in Seattle carrying a 40 pound subwoofer cracks me up. I wish he hadn't taken the amp though. Unfortunatly, because I bought the car used and have a loan, the check from the insurance company is made out to me AND a shop. They do this to ensure that the work gets done. This means that I can not take the money and buy the parts and do the work myself...although very simple, I'm forced to pay somebody. I will work it a bit to hopefully get the alarm paid for or at least partially paid for. I almost had an alarm installed yesterday. The shop suggested that it'd be cheaper to wait. Besides, there's nothing in my car at the moment worth protecting.
howards11
I'd go for something less than high end. There are all kinds of aholes out there waiting to do harm to your auto. Pioneer or Sony would be my first choices with Blaupunt or Panasonic coming in next. Let a dealer tell you how much damage was done to the indside of your Subie ~Howard

charm
My old deck was an eclipse, I was EXTREMELY pleased with its sound quality, not so much its ergonomics. It looks like the newer version of this deck has worked out some of the ergonomic 'bugs.' As far as the subwoofer, any opinions on whether I should stick with my single voice coil or go to a dual voice coil? What about amps, monoblock? teppichkopf
Watch where you install your stereo. As I found out, people who watch you put it in will know your stereo is worth stealing. About a week after putting one in, it was stolen. Basically I figured my neighbors watched me put it in since from my driveway they and only they had a clear view. (My neighbors were very seedy, and ran some shady businesses out of the house.)

Stigs
As far as the head unit goes... I am just replacing an old Pioneer Premier deck with a Panasonic CQC-8400U. I don't know how it stacks up against your old Eclipse, but it seems to be pretty stellar and is now on sale @ Crutchfield for $250 as of this week. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-uO4ct1Cr9Pm/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?I=133c8400&wm=cl That's about the cheapest I've seen it. tcspeer
Most likely your thief has a set of pro lock door opening tools, the ones locksmiths uses. They are not that hard to get a hold of.
