Fu@*^$g Yunkyards!

Recommended Posts

Man, I found a JY today with 14 Subarus in it (rare for this area). One of them was a 87 D/R Wagon sitting on top of another car and had 3 more on top of it. This pile of cars was near the crusher and are all to be crushed for scrap soon. The car had been stripped of the interior, most engine parts and most glass. It had the transaxle and rear end left on it.

Now, what is that car worth in scrap metal? Maybe $50? I asked about the trans and rear end.......he said $150 for the rear and $375 for the trans!!!

$525. Pure greed. That will just have to get crushed.

I guess it would have been different if it was sitting in the yard to donate parts like the rest of them, but this car has already been written off....headed for the crusher. Taking those parts would have lightened the car by maybe $8 to $10. I would have gladly paid $100 to $200 for the parts. 2 to 4 times what he will get for the entire car in scrap.

Am I wrong, or is this guy just a greedy A-hole?

He's probly not a greedy a-hole just dumb. probly thought he'd make an extra couple a bucks. The wreckers round here had 2 soobs that I was interested in parts from, but they quoted too high so I said fug'em and you no what they ended up crushing those cars, I made a point of telling drunken buddy wrecker owner the next time I was in that he could've got an extra 3 or 4 hun, out of those cars if he'd given a realistic price. I dread the day when the pickin's get slim fortunately that's a long way of here in the PNW.

Sounds exactly like my boss, who is also a junkyard owner. He's not dumb, just very arrogant and stubborn. He'd rather crush a vehicle than come down on price of a part, just to prove a point. He had a van ready to crush, a customer wanted the seats, told my boss flat out that he was crazy to want what he wanted for the seats and offered him half of the asking price. My boss then crushed the van right there in front of the customer.

Yeah, you can imagine being an employee for this guy is just wonderful. If I don't get accepted to college next month, I'm outta there.

FYI, on a GOOD day, you get about $4 per hundred pounds of crushed car. Right now the prices in this area are at about $3 per hundred. If that guy had sold you the trans for $50, he'd have greatly increased his profits for the day on that car.

Hope you get accepted to college - its a different world (wait, wasn't that a TV show?)

Anyway, I have had similar expierences, you just have to talk to the guy's face and tell him what he is losing, if that does not work, then tell him you really don't care if he loses the money either.

Maybe I am a bit cutthroat :D but I get by

usually it does not get that bad around here, but I do have to be a bit persuasive

I hate jerky JY owners too, don't feel bad about being jerky to them too.

Andrew and I once rescued a 5 speed dual range tranny from an 87 GL in a crush pile. Traded the yard guy a 12 pack of good beer, and he came up with a forklift and pulled down the car for us and set it on some rims... we took care of the rest.

Since I got the beer at a dock sale it was a $2.50 transmission

I know what you're sayin'.... Some of the stupid sh*t you hear from JY owners is just ridiculous.

I've been pretty lucky over the years in finding a junkman I can deal with. It seems like there's always at least one yard in town that would rather make a quick nickle than a slow dime. These guys understand that parts $$ is gravy, and those are the yards you want to do business with. P*ss on the rest of them!!

Don't rule out towing and impound lots. Most of the vehicles there are in fairly good condition and end up in junkyards anyway. As a whole, towing guys are pretty easy to deal with. I've gotten some incredible deals at these places.

good luck, John

Fact of life; you might as well get used to it. Another board member found an LSD on an RX and told the guy he'd be back on the weekend with the cash ($100). When he got there it had been crushed. The idiot couldn't wait another 4 days to crush the car. He didn't have the smarts to pull the diff and put it on the shelf either. They don't run junkyards because they're geniuses. Only one smart JY owner I ever met...Stucker's on Staten Island in NY. First one to ever open a JY with only foreign cars; he had a sharp mind and memory like a steel trap.

there's a yard here in Laramie where I can basically buy any full Subaru for 150 bucks. I paid 150 bucks for my '89 RX and it had a 'bad motor' which it kinda did but not too hard to fix either. I'm gonna see about getting a XT6 which I think has no motor but full 5-lug and the 14" motion alloys WITH good tires. Also has a manual FT4wd s/r 5-speed in it as well but the interior is kinda trashed:rolleyes:

Yea. Your boss really showed that guy. The man looking for the seats simply goes to another JY and will likely NEVER do business with your boss's place ever again. Who REALLY lost out here?

So have I actually, for the $2000 when my car was totaled off last time (idiot pulled out wrong way in front of my mom) I got all the front end parts, and they did all of the MAJOR body work for me (they were a tow, junk, and body work operation), towed it to and from their shop and it took me all of about two weeks to repair, once I got underway. I was pretty pleased with it all and all. It is getting ahold of them that is the hard part.

Junk yards tend to be arrogant because they figure (sometimes correctly) that you are over a barrel, but they will always be able to find more cars and buyers. In the short run they lose money because you take a hike, but over the long haul there are enough desperate people that it pays off. I just found a 3.7 and 3.9 transmission in two subes sitting next to each other, but I don't feel like paying what they want for them. Maybe in a couple of months they will have forgotten me and make a better deal.

Just the other day I told a junkyardowner that I'd never do business with him, that i'd urge my friends to never do business with him, and that if he called another customer a liar (looooong story), I hoped he got his behind whupped for it.

But if you want to drive an older 'Ru, then I guess junkyards are a necessary evil.

By the way, anybody know of any import junkyards on Florida's East Coast? Google's not much help, and since I'm moving there in like a week.....

That is basic junkyard buisness ettiquite... My boss also owns a junkyard.

He sells EA82 headlights for 100 bucks a pop, drivelines for 250 a pop, 65 bucks for the EGR selinoid.

hehe, needless to say, thats why I work for him. I get them for free now instead of having to pay for em.

Ask northguy... he got a great deal on a EA82 driveshaft...

My boss does similar stuff. Except, he doesn't help his employees either. I needed a headlight, windshield, and axle for my truck when I bought it- he charged me retail price on everything. He specializes in truck parts. His prices on new stuff are fair. Old stuff? Forget it. He only sells old stuff when people are desperate for it- weekends and holidays. The man wants $700 for a carbureted 350. Come on!!

Permanently losing customers is a daily thing for my boss. Losing employees is a monthly thing. We recently lost the biggest car dealership in town as a customer thanks to his arrogance. He used to be the only yard in the area, so he figured he could do what he wanted. We now have 3 competitors in town and 2 more within half an hour's drive. 2004 was the first year that profits didn't rise. I know exactly why, but my boss is blind to it. He'll remain blind to it until he files for bankruptcy- and then he'll still probably blame it on customers "being idiots."

I think they suck too, in Yakima, the best one by far is Buck's, with great service, and cheap prices, one yard quoted me 375 dollars for a used tranny, which I had to pull!!, and wanted 75 dollars for an EA81 distributor that was propbably junk anyway, I have had better luck just buying entire cars for parts, keep what you want, sell/trade with friends, sell the shell to the wrecking yard

to crush.

The best yards I've run across are the four U-Pull-It's in Southwestern PA. All prices go along with a universal list- $125 plus core for a used engine, $75 plus core for a transmission, $20 for a fender, $35 for a rear diff, etc- regardless of what vehicle it came from. The yard staff maintains a non-interference policy. They do absolutely nothing except monitor who goes in and out, and take your money. The only thing they'll do with the cars for you is set them on a stack of wheels so you can get under them. That's the way I like it- super cheap prices, and no difficulty with the staff.

That is exactly what I do. Buy entire non-running cars from someone for a next to nothing and part them. Only 3 cars in my signature are runners. The rest are donors. In addition to that, I have parted out 3 Subies and have the parts in a storage shed. I'm not hurting for parts but am always looking out for more.....you never can have too many spares.

That's why I laughed and walked away from the guy at the JY. No loss to me. A couple of hundred bucks loss for the JY owner. To hell with 'em. I can buy several entire cars for what he wanted for a trans and axle.....that he is about to crush.....and get MAYBE $50 in scrap.

I would LOVE for him to crush that car in front of me out of spite. I would stand close to him, pull 2 $100 bills from my pocket and stand them up in my hand. I would then look right at him and as the crusher is going down on the car, I would lower my other hand and "crush" the $100 bills at the same time. Put them in my pocket, tell him to have a nice day and walk off smiling.

My money is better spent buying parts cars and putting people like him out of business.

I have often thought about buying parts cars, but I live where keeping one - even very briefly - would be impossible. I just have a good soob - only junkyard I use, the guy couldn't care less about EA82 and earlier stuff b/c it just takes up space for him for the most part. He is also into modding himself, so we have a mutual interest. He likes seeing my car too, because in his part of the state it is impossible to find an EA82 car that is not rusted out.

I still end up paying much more, but I have to.
