Fang
I am looking for the best/cheapest place to buy an Air Control Valve for my 1988 GL Wagon. Yep, it is 4WD, Manual with OHC and SPFI. I live near Austin, TX Thanks! -fang
85Sub4WD
your local PAP junkyard I think an item item like that should be about $10 to $20 in good working condition - but I am a fierce negotiator BTW - You realize you can clean them right? Just spray it out with something caustic and check for freedom of movement - work like new afterwards If the solenoid is bad, then you have to replace it. hooziewhatsit
I believe I have one lying around I could let go for cheap if you can't clean yours or find one at a junkyard. -Dave
Fang
I'll try to clean it and either come back begging for one or bragging about what a swell job I did.... now where exactly is the Air Control Valve? -fang
85Sub4WD
It is on the front of your throttle body - there is a tube that comes in from the top, and it is attached with four screws.
hooziewhatsit
it's dang near impossible to get the screws with a normal screwdriver. I found a set of vice-grips will break them loose, after that they're finger tight (or loose).
Fang
I took a good look at everything today. (Thanks for the warning about the screws -- you're right!) It turns out that the solenoid is history. To add to the fun I spent most of the afternoon/evening driving to junk yards looking for the part. I just moved to Austin, TX, so I don't know the local junk yards yet. You know the drill: I call a junk yard and ask, "hey, do you have one of these cars?" They say, "sure we've got several of them. Come on down!" I hop in the car and excitedly drive 30 or 45 minutes, and when I get there they say, "Subarus are out in the back left corner somewhere..." An hour later (after a thorough and exhausting search) they say, "Oh, I thought we had one..." Then I drive to the next place in the opposite direction to repeat the same drill. Dang! I’m pooped and still need the part. I will be in the greater Dallas area tomorrow... Maybe I’ll find one there. At this point I am interested in buying one from anyone who has a spare. I can PayPal you the funds if you promise to mail it our quickly! -Fang
