hmm $1600 +tax for a new shortblock?

i saw that last night, but i'm a little weary of jdm engines.. heard from my subaru mechanic that they run leaded gas over there, which burns the valve seats out of the motors.. dunno how true this is though..

I don't know for sure, but I VERY much doubt that they run leaded gas in Japan. They are stricter about emissions and safety than we are, and their cars typically have a cat converter - both JDM and US - so I think leaded JDM gas is baloney.

 

Furthermore, I don't see how leaded gas would burn valve seats - the reason for adding the lead to the gas is to protect them. In fact many old US cars have to have a lead substitute added to the gas so the valves WON'T burn their seats because they are designed for leaded gas and don't have properly hardened valve seats.

well after reading the warranty on that jdm engine on ebay, i'm gonna pass.. it does not cover overheating, dissasembly, and must be installed by a shop (gotta have a reciept) and another long list of things gotta be done for the warranty.. by the time i got done with all of that i'd be better off buyin one from ccr..

 

even if i did do everything they list, if it overheats once from a blown head gasket, they won't honor the warranty cause it overheated, lol.. kinda a waste of warranty beings we all know what these engines do..

 

I did send CCR and email regarding a short block.. gonna wait for that to come back, then decide wether or not i'm gonna sell my AWD celica to buy a longblock, or miss a couple bills this month and get a shortblock..

I would be totally amazed if they ran leaded gas in Japan.

 

And the issue with valve seats and leaded-vs-nonleaded gas is almost exclusive to cast iron heads running native metal (as cast) valve sets, as opposed to separate seat inserts. Cast iron seats do not hold up well without lead/lead-substitute. All that is needed for these cast iron heads to handle non-leaded gas well is to replace the seats with hardened seats.

 

Since all of our Subaru engines are aluminum headed which require seat inserts, and I have not heard of a modern, aluminum-headed engine that didn't use hardened seats, I wouldn't worry about running unleaded.

 

Also, think about the way Subaru does things. Does it make any sense to design/build an engine differently for their domestic market vs USA, at least in some minor detail such as material of their valve seats?

 

I have not heard of any of us older-gen types that use JDMs having any trouble with valve seat wear.

$1600 for a shortblock, i bought my complete EJ22 for $400, im sure you can track someone down that is throwing either a EJ22 into an outback or someone that has an RS that is doing EJ20 swap on nabisco. no way should a short block cost thta much, unless it is made for tons of boost. heck you can grab a stage 1 shortblock form cobb for that much, and boost the crap out of it for that price.

I love it, the guy who bought the engine on ebay paid more then I did for my last WRX front clip with complete drive train. But then I got a great deal on it. I would say the CCR would be the way to go.

Yelp you gotta go with CCR.... We are now ordering our 3rd from them. They always stand behind their work and Rick is a master at what he does and Emily is Great.... Oh the reason for 3 CCR motors is cause we got 3 diff. subbies that we have put them in... Tim had them make a special one for his hatch... Vicky
