jedi_knight01
Hi I jsut recently had my check engine light on and found that the knock sensor was not working. The mechanic said it was easy to get to. But the repair manual says to remove the intake manifold... What they have listed on the invoice is as follows 1961 R&R Knock Sensor 99972 Engine Knock Sensor My Subaru is a1997 Legacy Out back wagon..... I usually try and do all my own work and have been successful, but is it worth doing or just pay the 72 bucks..... Thanks and I hope to be here more often.... Setright
No way! All you need is an eight inch extension on a socket wrench and you can get to it. Buy the new one first, and you'll know exactly what you're looking for. Screw on to the top of the rear section of the engineblock. Might be easier to get to if you remove the air filter box. Clean the mating surface and don't tighten it harder than by hand. Most often they fail due to cracking..

rcoaster
LOL now that I lost my job the force is what I will need.... Maybe it will help me find another.. Sorry to hear about yourjob loss... Back to the knock sensor installation.. You don't have to remove the intake manifold. However, you DO have to drain some coolant as the thread goes into a coolant passage. RC! idosubaru
i'd check the contacts and the wiring harness that plugs into the sensor. i wouldn't be surprised if the sensor is fine. i just mentioned this in another thread, i've driven 350,000 miles on a couple XT6's and have only had one sensor failure (MAF - broken wire). every other sensor failure was fixable by cleaning contacts, new connector, or fixing the wiring at the plastic connector. i even had a knock sensor code once and the connection at the wiring harness was bad.
