Ive Got It

front xt 2wd front struts lower 1 to 2 inches of drop (can you retain xt spring)

Rear Flip upper mounting bracket and cut one coil off of spring for 1 to 2 inches of drop

xt6 20mm sway bars makeing a slightly lower and better handling suby

How about that. :)

The sway bars won't make it lower, but otherwise, you are correct.

I still have those XT front struts :)

i know man but shipping just kills it for me. So darn expensive.

does cutting one rung off a spring really disimprove the handling on one of these wagons any worse then what they already are.

the cheapie ebay coil overs are nice if you want handling

be advised though... the ride WILL be rougher.

depends on your definition of nice handling. yea, my car handled awesome on brand-new pavement. but it was so stiff, that the slightest irregularity in the pavement meant you'd loose traction.

not to mention, it rode like an old truck.

and yes, cutting coils is terrible for handling. when you heat the spring, it changes the temperament of the steel, and usually softens the spring.

from my experience the last few months. as far as the alignment/handling relationship is concerned, the back seems to really like being at stock 4WD height. my car has a wicked rake right now (stock WRX springs on FWD legacy struts in the front, Monroe shocks for a subaru in the rear with 12" long 250lb/in eibach springs, riding at least as tall as stock), but handles amazingly. and I don't even have my rear sway bar in yet (waiting on poly bushings....). of course, it helps that I'm on 215/45r17 Kumho Ecstas......but even on snow tires, it was quite nice.

cliff notes......lowering an EA82 = cosmetic mod only.

You need to change your thing from ej addict to suspension master:)

Yea im going for more cosmetic then actual use. That is why i wanted to keep as close to stock components as possible. I might just try to swap the top hats over and see what that does. Have you played with the ford tempo, honda accord spring thing floating around here.

I keep having to rethink things because all of my experience is with other cars.

when I had my Escort ZX2 the handling was better with ebay stuff.

I was also thinking about the whole rear being higher on you car.

which would lend to more front grip because of the wieght being over the front tires and more rear slip because of less weight over the rear tires.

sounds pretty good. I could use some more hiding of the spring in the front.

(looks ghastly) the back looks fine as is.

Or maybe someone has a current write up with pics? Start a new one if anyone is doing the swap currently?

Which swap are you referring to?

XT6 swap?

Front XT swap?

Aftermarket springs on stock suspension swap?

This is kind of a general 'lowering' thread. Given that there are multiple ways of doing it, there would be multiple writeups.

How about you pick one of the methods and write it up for us?

You could just look for the article that was posted 2 years before you joined.

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50400

Hell, I didn't even have to use the search button to find it ;)

(Assuming you were looking for 5 lug swap stuff - the precursor to the best lowering options. Kinda hard for me to know since you were pretty ambiguous in your request for a new write up of... something)
