johnb102
My 95 Legacy Wagon Automatic with 65K miles recently starting making what I would describe as a clicking noise that is louder at start up and then fades somewhat. I thought it was belt noise, but I took it to my local mechanic who said the belts were fine and he thinks it is valve train noise. Does this make sense? Will it get worse, or should I just ignore it?
Tiny Clark
65K on a '95? You only drive it church on Sundays? Do you change your oil regularly? Maybe you need a higher viscosity.
mattocs
65K on a '95? You only drive it church on Sundays? Yeah...you need to drive it more. You have barly broke the engine in
johnb102
Yeah...you need to drive it more. You have barly broke the engine in The scary thing is I bought it when it was 1 1/2 years old and already had 17K miles, so I have really not put on many miles. It has always been a second family car. I do change the oil regularly myself with 5w-30. The shop said it was about a quart too full (I know I put just over 4 quarts in, but maybe it wasn't fully drained), so they drained a bit, but it still makes the noise. BigMattyD
I have a 96 Legacy, and have noticed the ticking noise on startup too. I recall having read some posts that the ticking in the valve train is ok. Maybe you can do a search and see what you come up with. matt
powderhound
It's a subaru...it ticks...that's how you know it's alive. Show me a flat4 that doesn't tick and I'll think something is wrong with it.
JohnnyB
When I switched to synthetic oil a few months back at around 90k, I think it took care of my valve noise. Now all I hear is the tick of the fuel injectors.
