espey_16
I have a 1983 GL wagon 5 speed 4x4 and it wont start on its own. I have to hook jumper cabels up to it and pour gas down the carb. last time I started it, it was idleing low and when I tried to adjust the idle, it killed it and I couldnt get it started again. The one time i got to drive it, I couldnt get it to go over 2000 rpms because the whole car started hopping around like someone was just learning to drive a stick. I rebuilt the carb and it didnt look like it helped, so I'm wondering if a new distributer, or alternator would help.
Turbone
Start with a fresh battery, change the fuel filter(s). This should help it start and idle a little better, then adjust the timing. A complete tune-up is highly recommended also.
northguy
Did you get all of the linkage hooked up correctly? Vacuum lines?
Bratenstein
My brat was hard to start and idled really poorly until I fixed a couple of vacuum line problems. That helped a lot, so I recommend checking your vacuum line plumbing too. If the vacuum diagram on the hood is gone, I think I can get a copy from my manuals. Send me a private message if you want the data.
[HTi]Johnson
Fuel filters...replace them and check for Vacuum leaks. THere are two, one in the engine bay and one in front of the rear passenger tire by the fuel pump, on top of a plate. [HTi]Johnson
