Need help with electrical gremlins

Recommended Posts

I have an 82 4x4 wagon, 4spd d/r that will not start. The starter is turning the motor over but there is no spark from the coil or power to the fuel pump. I have replaced the fuel pump control unit, and the coil. I tested the fuel pump directly from a battery and it worked. I am unsure of what to check next. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Did it just start acting up, or is this a restoration project?

I'd say get out the voltmeter and see how far the power reaches.

Ignition coils can be tested by measuring the resistance across their terminals. You'd need to find out which terminals, and how much resistance is spec.

The fusable links and the fuses in the fuse box are ok. Anywhere else to look?

And yes it has been an ongonig problem. I while driving i would lose power and it usally would die, able to restart in a minute or two.

you could test it with the aid of an oscilloscope

or

possibly with an older style "dwell tach" set in the dwell mode

As for replacement, boneyard or CCR Inc. http://www.ccrengines.com/

possibly

Your 82 is kind of an odd sort out

The FPCU it employs went out of fashion soon there after.

I am sorry I can not answer if a newer EA81 distributor will function properly.

Emily or Shawn at CCR may be able to.

If so there are two types Nippon (2 wd) and Hitachi (4wd)

Operating principles are the same but the advance curves are different.

Good call Skip on the diagnosis.

One easy test that can be done to see if the ignition pulses are coming from the distibutor is to place a test light probe on the minus side of the coil and clip to ground. While cranking the engine, the light should pulse with the ignition signal if things are ok. If the light just stays on then the problem is in the distributor area.
