'88 Xt6

Recommended Posts

hey everyone, i am starting this thread in hopes that some XT6 owners will give me some feedback.

a family member of mine has an 88 xt6, AWD, i was wondering wat some past ownders of this car have to say about it here on the board. it has really low mileage just because the person who bought it worked really close to their house and never had to drive far. considering its a subaru, i figure if i put some money into it, it may be a pretty sick car. so wat can u guys tell me (from personal experience possibly?) about the XT6

thanks alot in advance

I don't own an XT6 - but I will say that I think it was one of the coolest 80's Subarus because of the flat-6 engine I would probably buy one if I could - the air suspension will probably give you trouble, so you probably will want to convert it to conventional shocks/struts at some point - the modding possibilities are endless because the pistons are interchangeable with the EA82 (1.8L flat four) engine's - which means you can turbo it

If your lucky, the air suspension is still working. If not, it can be changed over to standard suspension. Make sure the power steering has the correct fluid in it, only Subaru OEM fluid is supposed to be in it. As with any Soob being bought, check the oil pressure - the pump might need a new seal kit.

Most leaks up front are due to bad crank seals and cam seals (and once in a while - a leaky oil pump). Find out when the timing belts were changed last, if its not known go ahead and change them. I think the XT6 sometimes gets a bad rap, but I think its from people that dont own one. These cars, IMHO,

KICK A$$. If you have ever driven the older ones (70's/80's 4cyl) this car makes them look like dogs :headbang:

i think its got a stuck in the 80's interior. if you can live with that it can be a nice car.

That might have to do with the fact that it was made in the 80's!

Good power, pretty user friendly controls, many wheel options unlike other 80's Subaru's, already has alot of the good parts like 20mm sway bars and 4 wheel disc brakes. There is room for performance improvements but most find them fine as is.

The only real inherent problems with these are the steering system and the air suspension.

I love mine! I would give up one of my other cars quicker than I would my 6. The problem with the steering is usually the brushes. They wear down and they are cake to replace. Most people don't have air any more, but I couldn't live without mine. It makes the ride so much better (have to experience it to appreciate it). There are sites dedicated to this unique ride...the one I frequent is XT6.net

I also must sing praise for the xt6. I had one for a while, and practically lived in it... if you drive this car.. you might not want to drive other cars for a while, as the ride is great, the torque is great, and the car is just all around great. it gets a tad cramped though if you stuff 5 people into it

they are great cars, handle good. they will never be confused with a honda, especialy when you rev it up. the steering system breaks, but is easy to fix, same as the air suspension. the motors seem to be tougher than the ea82s, and the pan holds 5.5 quarts =].

and... i like the super 80s interior. best seats subaru made, aside from wrx stuff.

i like em alot.
