TheSubaruJunkie
Im planning on picking up a EA81T Wagon soon, and its got an auto. On the test drive, it shifted pretty hard, but it was solid and not sluggish at all. When i tried to accelerate with the Tranny in 1st, it felt like the transmission was slipping. If I do purchase this car, I'd like to change all the fluids... expecially the AT fluid. Can anyone recommend some good stuff for AT Trannies??? This is going to be the 2nd Auto ive ever owned, and the 1st auto i had for only 3 weeks. -Brian
Turbone
I suggest pulling the gov off and giving it a good going thru. I think any name brand AT fluid would be ok, but it takes alot if you do a complete change - 6.3qrts.
TheSubaruJunkie
Thanks for the 6.3 quarts Now i know how much to buy. Isnt there like different types of AT fluid? And whats this gov you speak of, whats it do? -Brian
lefty2053
Just a tidbit. I bought a truck with an automatic in it. It was slipping all the time when cold. I flushed the tranny out and put in a new filter and the truck never slipped again. Could be just old fluid in it. As for fluids, there is a FORD fluid only and then there is anything else. Turbone
Brian, your sounding like a N00B I think theres something in the USRM and its been discussed enough in previous threads there should be several pages of info.
TheSubaruJunkie
its okay to be a noob. Im an AT Noob, and i wanted to hear from other's and their experiences with different types of fluid. -Brian
Alex C
Buy the cheap stuff for chevy's, you cant go wrong, just stay away from ford fluids, wrong in every way. Also, dont overfill, if you do there is a breather on the top that all the excess fluid will come out of, and, when overfilled, the tranny will slip on initial startup, and try to be in 2nd instead of first for the first minute or so of driving. erik litchy
As for fluids, there is a FORD fluid only and then there is anything else. actually ford in all thier wisdom have several current ATF fluids. mercon, mercon V some i forgot like type F for older fords honda has thier own theres surely others that have specialized fluids. the fluid quality is less important than its properly cooled. MilesFox
the recommended fluid for 3at's is dextron/mercon type II or III. same stuff that goes in the power steering i have seen dextron/mercon type IV thay have out nowadays for newer cars, but i dont know if this would work. i would think the newer is backward compatible with type II and III, and may be a better choice. but you would want to get some opinions on that
TheSubaruJunkie
Thanks miles. Just what i needed to know I was thinking of adding a cooler to keep the fluid temps low, but the AT wont be in the car much longer -Brian
