phishy75
new post for a new turbo problem... well I found an external pinhole coolant leak on the supply hose on my VF-2. Thought I had the problem licked, because when it idles all is well, but as soon as I drive it and get it boosting, the turbo starts to smoke like mad. Is this probably an internal seal? I'm thinkin (cause I really don't know the intricacies of the turbo guts) that perhaps there is some seal around the turbine shaft that could be toast and is causing some leaking when boosting. The smoke smells like coolant, and not oil. HELP:-\
85Sub4WD
is the smoke coming from under the hood or from the tailpipe? I know the schematic, and don't think there are any internal seals in the turbo for coolant if it is smoking out the tailpipe I think it is probably a blown HG or cracked head if it is smoking from under the hood, I am thinking it is burning off coolant residue from the leak just guesses, but I think you deserve a response
spanky_pete
I'm having the exact same issue with my turbowagon. After the car is warm it smells of burning oil and smokes from around the underside of the turbo. Definitely a leaky line or cracked housing. Do what I am going to, get a new turbo. phishy75
the smoke is coming from under the hood - from the turbo itself. what gets me is it is only when driving/boosting. After I start it up and idle for a while (even revving it a bunch) no probs. Only after driving it and getting on the turbo does it start to smoke - and it really smokes. Off to go pull it out again...
Turbone
The oil return line is probably split, cracked ot loose. Its under the turbo and goes to the back of the head. And its a beotch to get to. Sometimes the best way to deal with it is to remove the turbo. Oil out the tail pipe could also mean that the oil seal in the turbo has blown. Lots of owners mistake this for a bad HG, and people like us get a free or cheap Soob
bushbasher
The smoke smells like coolant, and not oil. HELP:-\ see this guys? Its not oil related.
phishy75
right on bushbasher - it's definitely not oil. Turbo's off again, and I can't see anything obvious, but I'm assuming there must be a small crack in the body somewhere that is letting coolant escape. There is a slight bit of play in the shaft especially on the compressor side, but nothing that would make the turbine bite into the housing. You sure you don't wanna flog that turbo you just picked up bushbasher:brow: hehe I'm gunna call the guys out in Sooke tomorrow and see what they want for one. Thanx for the input gents.... tizzle
Replace your cooling hoses, make sure you have all your copper washers in with your banjo bolts (4 of them) and torque everything down properly. See what happens.

BushmasterSI
I have had the same problem off and on. The thing thats different with mine is that it will come out the exhaust also and it only does it when it is warming up or when I shut off the engine after a drive. One of the coolant lines to the turbo was beginning to crack at the end, so I cut the end off and reattached it temporarily. I am in the process of replacing all of my cooling lines so I will see if the smoking still occurs after the lines are replaced.
NorthWet
Not exactly on-topic, but close: Another thing to consider is that smoke under the hood could also be caused by a fracture of the exhaust crossover pipe (uppipe); this is a common failure and occurs right at the turbo mount flange. If/while you have the turbo off, you might as well take a look at this failure point.
