tscinmd
http://homepage.mac.com/shanewolfe/PhotoAlbum20.html Here is the JDM motor - my brother risked his life in the ghettos of DC to pick it up at the terminal. They roughed it up a little during shipping , so hopefully everything is ok when we bolt it up. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it :-)
spanky_pete
Is that a gouge in the end of the crank? Edit: also looks like that dist. cap was busted for a while. Don't know if I'd trust that disty to be any good. Otherwise it's a pretty clean looking ea71.
mcbrat
that's got the side starter mount bell housing, so it should bolt up to the ea81 tranny's, or even the ea82 trannies.....
tscinmd
I havn't seen the motor yet, he is driving it up this weekend. I'm going to have to swap out the bell housing as mine has the top mounted starter -- but I'm going to keep the old one for the D/R tranny swap later on down the road. I do see the "gouge" in the pics ... I'll call him and ask. Will that need to be replaced since I am swaping out bell housings ?

tscinmd
Just called my brother - he said the gouge isn't a gouge, its just discolored.
Sweet82
On an EA71 what's the difference between a regular and a JDM motor? What are the specks? Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--EA81 stock 01 Forester--EJ25 stock
tscinmd
Same internals really ... there is a higher compression ea71 , but I don't know anything about it.

tscinmd
As far as BHP and other ratings, I think they are pretty much the same.
mcbrat
the particular JDM ea71 in the photo also should have hydraulic lifters.....

PoorManzImpreza
higher power, hydraulic lifters, bigger carb, ea82 accessory compatibility, ea81 valves, ea81/82 bell housing compatibility, bigger intake manifold...Late model ea71s were made for 'L-series' 85-94 body style..what guys call ea82 body style on here.. Phizinza
was there ever such thing as a EA61?? I think that's what I knew the old 1.6lr subies to be. Saw it somewhere, was it a misstake? Is there just EA71 81 and 82's?
Caboobaroo
There is the very rare JDM high compression motor which was almost a myth at some point... but I had one in my Brat and lemme tell you, that motor put some power out! Now XSNRG owns it and is going to give it a good home since I'm upgrading to a bigger motor for my Brat minitruck.

So is there a possibility that this motor wont work with my US ea71 carb or intake manifold?
JonOfScio
That depends on if the heads' manifold ports are any different. At least, I would think that is the only factor. But why would they be? Russel: you should have bought the dual carb EA71 manifold off Andrew and built the ************ out of that motor. Something like WRX pistons (since they are the same bore) sleeved, cammed, and port matched heads/intake.
