kidwired
Hi All, I just bought a 1993 Subaru Legacy Sport Sedan, 4wd/Turbo! has an AT. This car sure has some pep. I got a great deal but it needs a little help. 140k on it, runs well w/ but has little mis and needs general TLC. Tune up, oil change, trans service and timing belt is on my agenda. It just needs to be well running and reliable daily driver. What weight oil should I be using? What spark plugs? The heater/defrost fan only comes on in the 4 position (full on) it has no variable speed at all. whats that? I can smell burning oil from engine compartment, I havent seen anything obvious yet but seems like its from near the firewall. I'll clean it up and have a good look but is there a common issue? I need a few things like a backseat cushion, headlight lens, front indicator, maybe some front fenders too (silver). thanks Chris
beezer
Congrats on your car! I can't help with everything, but, I will try and give you a start. Spark plugs- NGK Oil leak probably not good news, probably rear crank seal, this means taking transmission off. Fenders and such, maye look around at scrap yards. Maybe get waterpump and seals done with the timing belt. Other people will probably be more help, just a start.
schspeedster
Hi All,The heater/defrost fan only comes on in the 4 position (full on) it has no variable speed at all. whats that? On a GM car this could be an open blower motor resistor. I would guess same thing on Subaru.

My '93 uses Chevron Delo 15W40, but the manual is your first source of info; and NGK plugs. The heater fan issue is the coil of resistor wire that has broken, which is what allows you to have the lower speeds. It is on the heater shroud and is a cast-iron *************** to get to. The oil burning smell may well be the grease leaking from the inner right-hand CV joint boot getting on the exhaust, which is right under the boot. Check that first. When that happens you will have smoke going right up the firewall. The cam covers can develop leaks but you have to be pretty ham-fisted to get big ones.
