Weight Stripping

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, what do you do to scavenge every last pound of useless ballast? Lighten the flywheel? Use alloys? Tear out the seats? What can I safely remove without looking like crap?

Come on, 115 hp on a EA82T will only take you past a WRX if you're driving the frame

Absolutely the rear seats. .75gal of washer fluid (which'll also reduce sloshing.) Rear floor mats. Spare tire. Roof rack. Speakers. A/C system. Carpet. Rear driveshaft, diff, CV axles.

Look at every single thing in the car and ask yourself "What percent of the car's mass is this object here, and can I live without it?".

But once you remove the big items like rear seats, you're looking at considerable cost / loss of functionality for minimal go-fast gains.

alloy wheels would save a lot of weight. prolly at least 5 lbs a wheel. I'd leave the back seat in. The bottom of the back seat weights about 3 lbs.

Run with a 1/4 tank of gas. Right there you just saved 70 some odd pounds in weight

Windows weigh alot. Take the carpets and insulation out. Backs of the back seat don't weigh much, but take them out. Plastic trim inside. Windows can be replaced with plastic, a lot lighter, will fog eventually. take the jack out of the back. Bumpers weigh a lot too. Just by taking mine off and shaking the rust out of them, I lost like five pounds per bumper.

Does the car need to be street legal?

Might I suggest removing the body for a huge weight reduction?

I saved a "ton" of weight by doing that.

Glass weighs!

Doors weigh,

Hatches weigh,

Hood weighs,

Seats weigh a bit,

My chrome bumper didn't weigh that much...

What do you need the car to do?

I like the idea of a lightweight flywheel. It will increase hp and torque, but make driving throug a parking lot a pain in the butt...

A lightened flywheel does NOT increase HP or torque. It allows the engine to change speed quicker.
