SuBrat84
So I found this car in the newspaper in Tucson, Arizona in late winter of '04. It was at Emich Olds/Subaru dealership. I may have over paid a little bit at 12k... but hey, it only had 48k miles on it!!! Aparently the guy who had it in Alaska didn't drive it that much... So I took delivery of my new baby roo and had to take it out to see what she could do. Not 25 miles from the dealership I'm goin down the freeway at about 105 when i have a sudden loss of power.. having no idea what was going on I decide to turn around and try and make it back to the dealer. Not even 3 miles from my "loss of power" I get this *pop* and steam just starts pouring out the hood scoop and any other way out of the engine bay it can. Apparently what happened is the piston threw itself out the block and blew the water pump!!! I saw the HOLE in the block.. you could almost fit your whole hand in there. Needless to say Subaru sent me a brand new 2.5 short block and the dealership took their sweet 2 weeks to replace the motor and whatever else needed to be replaced.. all free of charge. She's been running like a champ ever since though and it's cool that I got a brand new block!! I get nothing but hassles from the dealer every time I need parts though.. I've stopped buying stuff from them, and just order from online parts suppliers now. Anyway, to make a long story, well.. long... I love my subaru's

I can't imagine they used the old gaskets. They told me they replaced "Everything that needed to be replaced" They didn't give me a work order though. WoodsWagon
I wonder if the oil had ever been changed in the 48K miles. Seems strange to thow a rod at only 105mph, unless you were in 4th?
Phugoid
Did you sign an "AS-IS" agreement before you took delivery? I'd be interested to know how far dealers are willing to go to help you if you've signed such an agreement. Or is the car still under manufacturer's warranty? SuBrat84
I didn't sign an as-is.. but it wasnt under warranty. Subaru is just cool to give me a new block.. Plus we have a "Lemon" law in Arizona about that kind of thing. I can't even imagine why it threw a rod except maybe it had been sitting on their lot too long? (It's a 4spd Auto ) I've had it up to 135 since.. give or take a few mph because the speed-o only shows 120.

When I bought my '99 two years ago, the salesman was saying things like "we would fix anything small for you, but nothing big... like a clutch." I take delivery. I get 3 miles up the road. Engine is revving, but I'm not going anywhere. Clutch dies. Yes, they put in a new one (claim to) and I never see a work order. Could they have put in a used one? A cheap one? Probably. Never going THERE again..... Since then, she's been nothing but charming. Love my 'Ru!

Yeah, I got to watch them unpackage my block.. so I know that was brand new.. but you're right.. who knows what other crap they used off mine and probably other peoples engines... I'm going to get in there this week and see if they have it on file still....
