tashi
Holy cow, good site! I'm on my way to solving my damn binding problem! My girlfriend was handed down a '98 Outback and it needs a little work and tune, can anyone reccomend a Sube specialist or expert here in Victoria B.C.? I only went to the dealer once with one of my old GL's and although I don't remember the details (10years ago almost), I don't have good feelings left over about them. My VW experiance leads me to believe that an expert can save one major hassles. Thanks!
shimonmor
Don't know where in Victoria you can get help...but we can try here. What is the problem? Is it an auto or manual? Was the fluid in the diffs/gear changed recently? Incorrect fluid without the additive for limited slip (GL-5) can cause binding issues. That's the cheap fix. Gets more expensive from there. Sharp turns at low speed (parking), espically in reverse and espically after driving for more than an hour or so cause binding. It doesn't happen when first driving the car very much but gets pretty bad after going surfing (100-200km in a day) It's a manual, '98 Outback wagon w/ approx. 150,000 km. I've done some searches on binding and will be going out and getting a manual to try some of the eaiser fixes (fluid change, tire circ. measurements) when time allows. And before it goes in for sevice. I'd like to take it in for it's tune-up as I've never worked on such a fancy car before, only basic things like oil changes etc. on my old westy ('72), rabbit ('80) and 85 and 87 GL's. I found that having an obliging expert in town was invaluable with VW's and am looking for the same for the 'Ru. Thanks!
Lesbaru
Do you mind taking a trip to Bellingham WA? Harmony Motorworks (independent shop) in Bellingham is great, they love Subies and aren't expensive. A guy there named Mark took very good care of my '86 GL wagon and fixed quite a few things on it, and told me what to watch out for in the future. (my uncle and his kids have the car now) Skagit Subaru (dealership) in Burlington WA is also nice, they helped me a couple weeks ago for free. They're the closest to the ferry for you. If I buy another Subaru I'm getting it from them. Smart Service (independent shop) in Seattle takes good care of my '96 Legacy wagon.
tashi
Thanks Les, that's good info. Bit of a haul, but I'll keep it in mind if something really major goes wrong (crosses fingers).

Vanislru
Hey Tashi, Three point motors in Nanaimo is a bit on the expensive side of things but they are a Subie dealer and they do quality work. How's the surfin down there, we just got back from Tofino which was ok but most of the sandbars are still out of wack from the spring storms. Maybe time for a road trip to Sombrio and possibly Nootka in June. Best of luck with your car.
