Rodm21
Hey guys, quick question - I have an 88 GL wagon, auto, good old ea82.. Today I started hearing whining noises sounding just like a water pump problem, I checked all the belts to see if that is the problem, and it seems like it is the pump, when I looked up how to change the water pump it seemed easy enough. However when I popped the hood and looked it seems like I will have to take off the main pulley just to get to the water pump?? Is that the case and if so how hard is it to replace this dang thing, Im considering just taking it to a local shop and have them charge me 100 bucks to put in a 50 dollar part.. sigh.. Any help on what exactly it takes to replace this thing would be appreciated Thanks again for being so helpful USMB (Also I was wondering, none of my metric or standard wrenches seem to fit, what kits do you guys use for unbolting alternators etc) Drew
GLCraig
If a machanic is only going to charge $100 and the pump is going to be $50, that mechanic is either really cheap or dose not know much work is involved. Yes the main pully dose need to come off along with the timing belt covers and the timing belts. The common bolt head sizes are 8mm 10mm 12mm 14mm 17mm 19mm 22mm. 555Ron
http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=25 (This is for both ea81 and ea82, scroll down for ea82) Yes, it isn't easy. You will may need to take one or two of the inner belt covers off which may require one of the idler pulleys for the timing belt. (if this is the case the right hand and left hand belts will have to come off) But before you go too far... turn it off, and grab the water pump pulley firmly. Pull it up and down, left and right... if theres is any slight play then the bearing is starting to go. Next, turn it on, get a long screwdriver and stick the pointy end on the body. Put your ear to the handle on the screwdriver... what do you hear? Try and locate the noise where it is loudest. It could be your waterpump, it might be your alternator or one of you timing belt idler pulleys. No point replacing the water pump when all you need is a relatively cheap bearing for your alternator... which can be replaced.

No, thats about what a water pump should cost installed. it only takes 20 minutes to do a water pump. Lets see, thats figuring out to 300 dollars an hour.. Not bad wages. Ron - the timing belts do NOT need to come off on a EA82 water pump job. pull the raid (2x12 mm bolts) remove crank pulley bolt (22mm) A little trick to doin this. make sure you have a 18 inch breaker bar. brace it on the drivers side of the pulley on the bottom of the core support. unplug the coil wire. now bump the starter. it will spin the bolt right out of the crank. (JUST MAKE SURE THE BREAKER BAR IS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AGAINST THE CORE SUPPORT OR YOU WILL HAVE A FLYING BREAKER BAR) take off drivers side timing belt cover. Remove 3/4 of the bolts holding on the center cover. now pry the middle cover open and put something in between the block adn the cover to hold it away from the water pump. if it has a mech. fan on it, remove that. before taking crank pulley and t-covers off. Now take the neck off the water pump (1x12mm) remove the heater core hose from the water pump. Now unbolt the water pump (5x10mm) scrape off old gasket, install new gasket with pump. Reverse to install.
