starting problem w/ 90 legacy

Featured Replies

HI,

I am having a problem starting my 90 legacy. It will start to ignite, then begin to shake and die. After that it will start but only if I pump the gas hard. The fuel pump and injection check out ok. I had the coolent temp. switch fixed and it runs better. However, twice now it has start to shake and seemed like it was going to die. The CEL came on. Without me adding gas the car started and the CEL went off.

Any ideas?

Thanks

check the codes, then post results..i'd also bet that if you searched for "hard start" or something like that, you'd get some helpful threads as well..

Hi there,

I can't check the codes at AutoZone because my car too old. The problem with checking the codes, is that the CEL comes on very irregularly. Other posts from this site mentioned changing the coolent temp Switch or to look into my cam sensors. Coolent switch was replaced and the car ran well for about two weeks. Today, the problem began again. I think I will try the sensors and hope for the best. Any other ideas are Welcome.

Thanks.

Pull codes using instructions on Legacy777's site-it is for pre-OBD2 cars like your 90 and my 91. After connecting connectors under dash, light on dash will flash to let you know what code(s) is. No reader required!

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I put a switch to the wires that you connect under the dashboard to read the codes. I mounted the switch under the dash, easy to reach but out of plain sight. Now when the CEL comes on I no longer have to crawl under the dash.

Since I re-calibrated the TPS car seems to start easier and have more response , especially from idle.

From aftermarket manual the procedure is:

Install a 0.7mm feeler gauge between lower throttle stop screw and throttle stop lever, which are located on underside of throttle body. Do not use screw on top of throttle body.

Connect ohmmeter between TPS terminals 1 and 2 and check continuity is displayed.(these are the 2 top terminals after harness plug is removed)

Remove 0.7mm feeler and replace with 0.9mm feeler guage between throttle stop screw and the throttle stop lever .Check there is no continuity between terminals 1 and 2. If necessary , rotate TPS until adjustment is correct.

Tighten TPS adjustment screws and confirm the adjustment is correct.

Note: if correct adjustment cannot be obtained, renew the TPS.

Hope this helps
