froggymike
Tested the compresion. About 90 all around. Drained the oil. It really, really stinks. I have worked on a lot of cars and never smelled anything like this. It smells like ten-day-old dead cat. Me thinks the engine is fried. Gonna get a new (used) one. Also the A/T is leaking from the gear housing and the torque converter (both pink and yellow fluid). So I will probably get a new tranny too. Is it difficult to switch from Auto to Standard tranny. Are the half shafts the same, ect.???
kingbobdole
ok, a few points... Are you sure the olds not just gear oil? If it was tick happy someone might have tried to shut it up with gear oil. Auto to manual conversions are fairly easy, but make sure you get a tranny out of a turbo... and make sure its got the same final gear. The axles are the same turbo for turbo, but not 2wd or non turbos. Also, strange color ATF in your tranny usually means that the transmission oil cooler in the rad is leaking... mixing coolant and ATF, you might need a new radiator too. ShawnW
That and are you sure you didnt drain the gear oil instead of motor oil? Easy to do on a car with 3 drain plugs and an unconventional engine/trans layout. (better though LOL) Gear oil stinks worse than regular but on a bad engine that oil smell bad too especially if its been sitting a long time. I may stick with A/T and give my sore, worn out clutch knee a rest... but having a 5spd in the turbo wag WOULD be cool! Ill see what the prices are for each, then decide. I must be carefull though. My band has a gig on Saturday nite and I don't want to mash those fingers.
