Seann
At nearly 10 PM the car is making some sort of noise from the front end, and it hasn't been driven since noon. I've checked twice in an hour and it still makes that sound. 1995 Subaru Legacy wagon. I've owned it for a year and have no history since it was a private sale. I'm not a mechanic and am fairly naive as to the names of things I can see. That being said, the noise is coming from the engine compartment from a metal blocklike component in the very front passenger side. In my old Ford Crown Vic this was the location of the AC unit. The noise sounds like a small motor running, has a mechanical cyclical whine to it, but I suppose it could also be interpereted as a hiss as well. I don't know what it could be, and I don't have any mechanically inclined friends who would have any better ideas, the mechanic is closed until Monday. Anyone have this happen before? Cougar
It may be an air pump but I'm not sure. If it goes for too long it will discharge your battery. You may have to disconnect the battery to stop it.

On our 93 legasy it was abs that did that a couple times . we pecked on it and it quit.150000 miles later it hasn't done it again
sea#3
Mosy likely it's the ABS relay stuck on , if you remove the phillips screw on the black cover you should see two relays pull a relay till the noise stops, that would be the one SEA#
gtwagon
I agree with the posts about it being the abs pump. On our 95 we just tapped the relay (pull the cover off of the relay box first) and it would stop. It happened occasionally each year that we had the car and we never did replace the relay. Guest jclay
Ditto on the ABS relay, that happened occaisionally on my 94, the only problem it caused was running the battery down overnight. If you don't feel confident messing with the relays, just disconnect the battery for a while, the results the same .
Seann
Well, it did kill my battery, thats for sure. I jumped it and brought it to my mechanic and they don't seem to see where the problem is. For those of you that did have this problem with the ABS, what did you do to fix it? Thanks! Sean
