Hello.

I just bought a red/gray 1998 Subaru Outback Sport with a 5-spd manual tranny. It has 122,000 miles on it and I paid $4,000 U.S. I feel like a got a pretty good deal, it seems to be in excellent shape. I have a few questions for all of you:

1) What does the "Sport" signify on the Outback?

2) What kinds of things should I look out for with this high mileage?

3) Are there any items you would recommend I replace ASAP just to be safe?

4) Any other general advice?

Thanks a lot.

(I apologize if these things have been talked about a ton on this forum)

1) As far as I know the "Sport" is the Impreza model instead of the Legacy model?

2) Depends what motor is in it?

3) Couldn't hurt to do the plugs / wires / oil / air filter

4) Have fun with it!

Yeah...the Sport means it is an Impreza. If it has the 2.2l engine (I think they do), then it should run for a very long time.

I would also replace the plugs, wires, and all the filters...its cheap and wouldnt hurt.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

I was able to find some info. It is indeed based on the Impreza as opposed to the Legacy. It has the 2.2L instead of the 2.5L which is a good thing from what I have been reading?

I'll be sure to do the plugs, wires, air filter, oil and maybe the distributor cap and rotor and timing belt if I feel like spending the money.

Thanks for the help.

Outback Sports don't come with the 2.5L until 2002 or 2003. 96 O/B Sports, are 1.8L, 97-2001 2.2L. One question though... Distributer cap and rotor? Never seen one on a car newer than like 1990. My 93 Impreza L has a coil back, not a distributer.
