ej22 disty and carb pics i found

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but, this idea has really got me thinking.

Imagine how much easier would the EJ swap be if you could just bolt a carb and disty etc onto your EJ22. Because the way I saw it, the most difficult bit of the swap was the wiring......

At the moment I'm just bouncing ideas round in my head. So the rest might not make much sence...

Carbed EJ22T? In a Vortex?? Or any other L Series Subaru etc......

What is the story with turbos and carbs?

Even just a Carbed ej22. Sure it would be a bit more gutless than the FI one, and I'm thinking the ej18 carb would be slightly restrictive, but if you could get a higher flowing carb, exhaust etc, You could have a helluva simple, fairly high hp, old gen vehicle right?

Or am I just completely wrong? I hope not because I like this idea....:)

Any suggestions or details I am missing would be coool. Thanks all!

Ace auto wreckers in Palmerston North had an EJ18 powered legacy wagon there a couple of months ago, had the dissy still in it (EJ22's have a blank off plate) and a manifold for a carb, but the carb was missing. Phone them on 06 3567400. It was bolted up to a dual-range box, i know the 2L legacies have only 1.2:1 low range but im not sure about the 1800 ones. I took some photos, theres an old thread in the offroad section.

looking for a unicorn is fun too.......

easy'st way to do it is to find a disty and backing plate off a ej18 carb motor and use a webber for carburation oh and a ej18 carby intake manifold would be helpful as well

so what is wrong with the stock EJ management and ignition? adapting old technology when the stock, proven, reliable stuff is so readily available just doesnt make sense to me. I am more of a fabricator than an electrician, but I would still rather wire in a stock ecu and have a nice running clean burning engine that is easy to get parts for than worry about cold starting, vacuum leaks, gummed up carbs, timing off, etc.

unless were talking 48IDA webers and a serious MSD ignition, then that is pretty cool. but in that case it will still be a gas hog, need frequent tuning, expen$ive, etc.

This idea suits me down to the ground. :):) Love to hear from anyone with sucess in this already?

Mine is EJ22 AND distributor fed.

Its from a Subaru Fiori 4 cyl.

From what I can see they have bored a hole in the cover plate and fabricated a slide for adjustment.

The disty body is O ringed.

Works a treat.

Bugger computors and their pesky 0's and 1's.

(I am a bit of a luddite).

If I had to put carbies on it I would cut the runners and mount a pair.

My jet boat is getting the same treatment- torque issues are non existant with water jets.

We didnt get the EJ18 carbie models in OZ, the Kiwis had the "good stuff".

If i remember i'll get the model number of the ej18 dissy i've got....i think its a mitsubishi electric company one

Thats interesting, the only markings I can see on mine are on the cap, and its a mitsubishi one as well.

Hmmmmm.

Common part from the shelf maybe?

Where does the disty mount on the EJ series? And Monstaru, you are using a regular Escort disty???

For my driving wants/needs, I would rather have the precision of the EDIS and EFI, but getting something up and running quickly is appealing.

i have fitted one of those disties now and am working on a manifold. that escort distie fits like a glove with very little modification.:D

Hello...What year, model, engine, tranny, etc. Escort did you get the disty from???

I need a points/condenser disty for my ea82, on which I have installed a big Weber carb. and eliminated all comp.'s.

Thanks

the disty comes from an 82 escort or exp.......there are two types.one with the ignition module attached......and one with it seperate.i voted for the attached module.just because.less hassle for me.

the ea-82 application i am unsure of.

i saw the link in the original post about 6 months ago whilst searching around the net.and have a ton of research on it since then.i have yet to get the damn motor together to get the proper curve, but i am very close to that as well.

i tried justy disties with a plate inbetween the disty and the block,i tried a couple of mitsubishi ones and eventually narrowed it down to a justy ,a ford festiva, and the escort.the escort fits right in there .hence my decision to go with it.if aviation guys are using it i am sure that it will do for the street or woods.the size of motor on the escort was the closest as far as output in cc's.:grin:pics here

EA82 and EJ22 are completely different animals, and we have answered you on this before - you need a points disty from an EA71, and modify the drive gear.
