Olnick
Welcome, Tanya. You've hit on the right site for Subaru help--I swear these are the most helpful, caring car people on the planet! I have little expertise in the thermostat/radiator area, but I'm sure you'll get a ton of responses. A couple of suggestions: First, tell us more about your car--year, model, transmission, mileage, any history of repairs or problems. Anything unusual happen prior to overheating on your trip? Second, try the search function. There have been many writeups on cooling system problems that may pertain. Again, welcome and good luck.
Cougar
Welcome to the forum Tanya. The test that Subie Gal mentioned is a done by sampling the coolant for hydrocarbons. They can do this with either a tester that sniffs the coolant or they can also add a chemical to a coolant sample that will change color if gases are in the coolant. Either test is cheap to do. From the sounds of things you may have a small gasket leak. You could also have a partially plugged radiator that could cause this to happen.
