bustle
Is it possible to buy new generic struts and fit them or is this strictly a good used or factory new deal? Mine are O.K. for now but the previous owner said they won't hold in winter. Thanks

Sweet82
They can be found, they are just expensive. I was quoted $30/ for some on another vehicle... No thanks! I have a snow scraper that works fine for much le$$.
Roundeye
Small pair of vice grips. Much cheaper and will NOT fall on your head.
Hank Roberts
1988 GL wagon here. I'd buy new -- anytime before next winter, good chance for a group buy -- a big Phillips screwdriver, even my palsied (carpal tunnel) hands can handle! They're riveted into the brackets on either end --Subaru-specific? Or are these like many Japanese car parts, standard on many brands? If unique, I wonder if the rivets could be drilled out and a generic strut put in, and re-riveted? Junkyard parts won't do unless picked known good in below-freezing weather -- I need mine to hold that hatch up while I'm winter weather gear, cold camping, where hatch creep-down-and-whack-you happens. Or does anyone have a pressure meter/scale to test a good strut for compression? I suppose I could refrigerate mine and then test them .... Naaaah. Too much. bustle
This was what I was wondering. Any body try that? If unique, I wonder if the rivets could be drilled out and a generic strut put in, and re-riveted?
Hank Roberts
Thanks to the forum tool that shows related threads -- the answer's yes -- answered before asked: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9246
subynut
I bought a set of StrongArms (4949L and 4949R) from Carquest for about 80 for the pair.
karinvail
hmm - I've never had trouble with the lift gate struts not holding it up. Mine have all worked very well. Hubby took one off our parts car when we had it in hopes to use it on the back door of his snowcat, but it's TOO stiff to use that way. Maybe someone wants to trade me a wore out one he can use, LOL!
