Microracer Posted May 6, 2005 Share Posted May 6, 2005 OK board members, Here are the symptoms...When shifting from Park into Drive after starting the car I get a thumping sound. BUT, if I try it again no thumping sound. If I jump on the gas quickly I can hear a thumping sound. Also sometimes if I am hard on the gas then let off I hear a thump. I know my lower ball joints need replacing, but I think the DOJ is causing this sound. Are my suspicions correct? I only have 10K miles on these reman axles can they be failing already? And if the DOJ fails, what happens? Will it lock up the wheel and cause a crash or just fall into a bunch of pieces then I will have a OWD (one wheel drive) instead of FWD :-\ . BobBrumby Posted May 7, 2005 Share Posted May 7, 2005 Dont quote me on this but when you doj it just breaks and you are left with 0WD (zero wheel drive) as these subes dont have locking diffs. Just change into 4wd and you will have a rwd subie untill you fix it. Doj can make noise for ages before completely destoying themselves. I get the thump thump on decelleration. 85Sub4WD Posted May 7, 2005 Share Posted May 7, 2005 I would check my transmission fluid too - my parents have automatics, and if their fluid gets low "bumps" start to appear in the transmission - I hope that's your problem (because it is simple/cheap) otherwise, the DOJ sounds very feasable Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

ByTheSea Posted May 7, 2005 Share Posted May 7, 2005 Check for any signs of metal dust betwean the cone washer and hub on the end of the cv. If the splines are worn in the hub or axle it can move back and forth slightly and over time will get loose because the cone washer wears away. If that is the problem replace the axle and hub. I never knew worn ball joints could cause that kind of racket. Now if I could get rid of the TOD I'd be in great shape! You can get to teh oil pump where the mickey mouse seal is by pulling the raidiator, and and taking the timing belt covers off. There will be more than enough room to do it.
