timing belt thought ......

Reading Miles belt install info

 

it implies that no matter where the driver cam was

when you took off the belt

as long as it is up, then down when you do the Pass. side

that all is OK

 

am i understanding this correctly ??

 

that would mean 'up' is always the same state no matter what ?

 

is this true

even if it was down or totally out when you started ??

If you put the flywheel at the proper marks, then turn the cam (driver side)to the proper up position , it will be right, no matter where it was before that, as in broken belt position. Just don't move the distributor, the belt marks are just for the cams.

Just to clarify about the proper marks. These would not be the timing marks. The marks you want are just about 1/8 turn CCW to the timing marks. Line up the middle mark to the pointer and then set the drivers side cam mark to the 12 o'clock position. Once the belt is installed, rotate the crank pulley until the drivers side cam mark is at 6 o'clock. Then make sure the passenger side cam is at 12 o'clock and install that belt. Should be good to go then, simple enough?

cool

 

i was doing my belts yesterday

and didn't realize

i took the belts off with the driver cam down

but the flywheel on the timming marks three

 

so i just turned the driver cam to make it the correct way - up -

 

just wanted to make sure i wasn't going to mess anyhting up by doing that

 

i followed miles' write up

had no problems

just wanted to confirm

'cause the write up says nothing about that kind of stuff

yea you wont hurt anything having the cams not lined up right. They are non-interference motors. I'm not sure why the t-belts are made out to be such a big deal. These motors are 10x easier to do t-belts on than a EJ22 and they only have one t-belt.

lol.. you made me think about this last night for a while, and I just figured out how it works :-)

 

basically, no matter what position the crank is in, it could either be on the compression stroke or exhaust stroke. However, when the driver side cam (plus disty) is aligned to 12o'clock, it defines wherever the crank is as either compression or exhaust.

 

along the same lines, I believe if you lined up the crank and put the driver side on 6o'clock, it would be 180* off (BAD).

 

hope this clears up some questions on why it works.
