s'ko
how hard is it to replace a windshield. I have source a windshield for my OBS for $75.00. What do I need to do to replace it myself. Local store wants $175 to get it replaced. Is it worth the extra $100.00 to have then do it? BW
mtsmiths
Is it worth the extra $100.00 to have then do it? BW In short ... YES! And then if it leaks you can take it back.
northguy
$175 is cheap. I'd be leery about the quality of work at that price.
Sweet82
I had my Forester done, it didn't take 20 minutes... However, I'd never try anything like that on my own. If you break it you loose your $75!!! There is also the old windshield removal to deal with... If you brake it...it could be messy? I'd opt for $100 worth of insurance and have it installed. Sydfloyd44
DO...NOT...DO....IT!!!!!! Leave it to a professional!! There is a LOT more involved than you may think, not to mention the SEVERE consequences if you do not install it properly. Your windshield does a lot more than keep the bugs out of your teeth on the freeway! It is a structural part of your vehicle! I very much agree with northguy! $175 sounds like it is a little low, but if they are slow, it is not uncommon for companies to drop their prices. Just make sure that they will warranty the replacement for as long as you own it and also make sure they are not a "here today, gone tomorrow" company! (warranty including rust, in case they do not prime properly!!!) I am not affiliated with PPG Auto Glass other than using their glass on a daily basis, but here is a link to some info on why you should leave it to a pro. http://www.ppgprostars.com/1_1_safety.htm
s'ko
thanks for the info. I am learning that somethings are left to professionals. I am trying to re-do my exhaust on the BRAT and this is how I feel about. next time I will just drop the money and have a pro do it. BW

BW For some things, that is the best option. windscreen glass is one of the big ones there. a sunroof, exaust, and alignment are others that I can think of right away. . . Setright
Yep, let someone with a bit of experience and the right equipment do it. Of course, there is never any way of being sure that they do it right...
cookie
and the new ones are a pain in the butt to get right. These days I just have somebody do it who does it every day. Since they are now a bonded structual part of the car they must be done correctly. That price is quite cheap. I seem to remember my last Mercedes being over $300. mtsmiths
Actually the price is about right for Montana, but then why bother here, it'll get broken on the way home from the auto glass shop. They don't ticket here, heck half the MHP cars have stone chips and cracked glass.

Could that have something to do with most if not all of the major roads also being major trucking trunkways? <G>
