M@dM@x Posted May 10, 2005 Share Posted May 10, 2005 All I have to say is my 95 Legacy L 2.2 liter is the easiest car to work on. I changed both front belts in 30 minutes yesterday. I changed the fuel filter in 20 minutes today and can change the oil in 10 minutes every 3k. I plan on changing the diff oil this weekend (this could be a bit tricky because of leverage) as well as the trans fluid. These cars are designed for the weekend mechanic and I'm very impressed by their simplicity. My next new vehicle is going to be a Subaru. I've immediately fallen in love with these cars. I know the feeling.. i bought a BMW once... it was nice, and fun to drive.. but when I went to go do regular maintenence on it, and fix a few "minor" things.. I ended up trading it UP for a impreza L and I wont go back.. not to mention, every time i work on "another" kind of car.. it just pisses me off and makes me love subarus simplicity more and more! welcome to the USMB! I've worked on tons of cars. You name it, I've changed something on it. I'm just very impressed with the fact that the car was designed to work on easily. USMB! Rocks! Oh, my "impossible to fix american made car" is a Frazda Probe. I love the car but it is the most "Impossible Car" to work on. I also have a Pontiac 87 Fiero Gt. Have I said I love Subaru yet? Gnuman Posted May 10, 2005 Share Posted May 10, 2005 Heh, Emily was given to me when her owner (my stepdaughter, who bought it from a friend of the family that was the original owner) had the clutch start to fail, and since she does not do her own repairs. . . Well, I took just one look under the hood and I was in love with the car (See my sig for details). First time I crawled under the car I fell in love all over again. . . then I drove it (after adjusting the clutch) and it was all over for me and any other make of car. This car has served me dependably from day one, and it is not like I baby this car or anything like that. Heck I often do stupid stuff like towing a car that weighs more than me up and down hills, pushing/pulling just about any kind of car to a safe place off the freeway, hauling transmissions/engines in the back, Trying to break traction on the tires (that didn't work, exactly. It took off like a scalded cat instead), and stuff I don't even want to mention here. . . This car is designed to be repairable, and it is. Easily. I'll stick with my beloved Legacies. That is a car you cannot write a manual for. Just as soon as you say that something cannot be done with that car, someone goes and does it. . . Often me. . . I too am amazed at how it seems designed for the owner to work on. After wrenching on a 4WD Honda Civic wagon I drove a few years ago, I had sworn off Japenese cars...and pretty much front wheel drive cars in general. The 2.2 is a great engine. I've got 164,000 miles and mine is purring along smoothly. Power isn't bad for a 4 cylinder, but it's still just a 4 cylinder. My only gripe has been gas mileage, but I can live with it I guess consider how great everything else is. I'm lusting after the new Bajas now... But, today I had to pass two cars today and it responded just fine (dumby drivers talking on a cell phone). I just replaced the fuel filter the other day and have allready ran a full tank through the car and noticed 2 mpg difference. It could also be that the summer gas may be out in my area now. I was very impressed with the Corsica, it never once broke down and ran like a dream. Once I inherited the Scoob,I fell in love all over again. After getting frusterated just trying to do a simple oil change on the Chevy, which was really not so simple due to the idiotic design of the car, the Scoob presented itself as a dream.
