1Big Ed
I am now considering purchasing a new subaru. Initially I was interested in the Legacy GT Limited Sedan with the 5 speed manual. However, I believe that I am now leaning very heavily toward the Outback XT Limited (also 5 speed manual). I am coming over from a German car with exceptional handling capabilities. I have not yet driven the Outback, but have heard good things about it. I am concerned that it won't be a "driver's car" for those spirited rides that I love to take. I am also somewhat perplexed that Subaru has not seen fit to mount audio controls on the steering wheels for its OB's other than the 3.0 models. Does anyone know whether the '06 model will change this. I also have an iPod hooked up to my car now (direct wired into the head unit where the trunk mounted CD changer plugs in). Has anyone tried to wire their iPod to the OB or Legacy? If so, how difficult was the procedure and what equipment and tools do you need to perform this alteration? Any assistance would be most appreciated and welcome. Thanks. 1Big Ed
Cougar
The Outback may not be to your liking. It seems you would like the WRX ride more than the Outback. A good test drive will let you know.

I would very much like the WRX ride, but there is one other consideration that I have to take into account. I have two growing boys ( 9 & 12) who will not be able to sit in the back seat of a WRX for extended periods (as we do travel the East Coast). Hence, the 2.5 Turbo in the Legacy or Outback will be able to handle my need for speed, but also compromising on the ability to transport the family in comfort. Thus, my dilemna continues . . . . ~01~Outback
If your after ride and space, id say the Legacy is your car! the Outback handles great for me, but i dont give it heaps, and im used to cars that dont handle at all, so its really horses for courses! take a run in the Legacy first! brus brother
Search around here and there are some (me included) who aren't thrilled with the handling of the 05 OB. There are other Legacy/OB sites where some immediately considering upgrading suspension and tires. While I'm not quite as fanatical, it's a bit sloppy in hanling even compared to the tuned suspension of my 00 Legacy GT (both wagons). I didn't drive the new GT Legacy so I can't say anything about its suspension. I was trying to avoid the high octane requirement of the turbos. The ipod is an issue on the 05s. Use the Search function on this site. The early stock face plate for the radio/HVAC is one piece (now 2) making aftermarket changes difficult and there is not a clean ipod interface. It's a 1st year production issue that should be rectified by 06. 06 models should be here in August but rebate/incentive deals don't usually appear for at least a few months after that. By then, the 05s you're looking at now will be heavily reduced for clearance. BTW, used to go swimming in the abandoned quarry up Lochearn (sp.) Rd. in the late 70s and tubing on a river in the same area while attending UMBC Baltimore when Fells Point was just a bunch of funky dive bars... and now?!
