Drove my first EA82T today

Recommended Posts

Well, I got a turbo running at work.. First time I drove one of those.

If they didnt have the turbo lag of death, they'd be fun cars. This turbo didnt seem to spool up until about 4k rpms. but when it did.. boom tire spin.

I'd like to have a EA82T, but I think I'd have to do all the mods Will did you his engine before I'd be able to deal with the turbo lag.

Only problem with the car at the shop is that it needs head gaskets. car runs fine when you are on the gas, but as soon as you let off and it idles, you can smell the antifreeze in the exhaust.

eh, another project...

You have to remember that the headgasket causing lower than normal compression and with antifreeze contaminating the air/fuel mixture your not going to have a healthy energetic Turbo Engine. This explains your excessive turbo lag.

My EA82-T even tho its all new now has very little turbo lag and takes off just fine, and its an automatic. Even before my rebuild there wasn't much turbo lag.

The Main things I have noticed create excessive turbo lag on the EA82-T are :

1. Ignition Timing Incorrect

2. Knock Sensor Failure

3. Exhaust Leaks

4. Intake Leaks

5. Valve Timing Incorrect

yeah.. it runs, so I think my boss is just going to sell it for cheap. I'd like a turbo EA82, but all the ones I've seen in Fairbanks have blown head gaskets.

I guess I should plan on ripping one down and putting good copper hgs in it and changing all the o-orings/gaskets on the intake/turbo/exhaust

I'd be looking for a turbo wagon with a 5 speed D/R in it. If anyone has a nice one (No rust, no dents) in the Northwest Area let me know. I could be looking for one in the fall.

Good put, I was thinking the same, I have driven many turbocharged cars, and to me the EA82T has one of the lowest occurrences of turbo lag of those I've driven. I think Subaru did a great job of sizing the turbo to the engine. If everything is right, they are very responsive cars.

Me too torxxx, me too.... I would even trade away my working wagon for a fixer-upper turbo wagon if I found one! I have YET to see one though! The only one I have seen was a automatic and got FLOODED (my neighbors). If I would have known he had that car when flood time was coming, I would have dragged it out of there for him!

I agree about responsiveness, since it's in fairly good sealed condition my EA82T, stock intake/exhaust, starts spooling the turbo up around 23-2500RPM. Of course it likes to be in 2nd gear when beginning these turbo runs :brow:

To the best of my knowledge there were no standard turbo 5spd D/R wagons made, although some people have swapped that tranny onto GL-10 turbowagons. Maybe a few special order models floating around in the boondocks.

There is one sitting at my shop. Its an 89 I believe. Its got a rod knockin pretty bad. Nice body on it though.. I guess I could always use that one. Its got a red interior though. Kind of a bad color. The black exterior with tinted windows looks good though.

Sounds like a RX might be a good buy. Its gonna be hard to pry one out of people hands up here, but I think its possible. What year is the Black RX with gold lettering on it? I saw one of those the other day.

The black RX was a 1989 1/2, it was actually introduced after the start of the 89 model year. I believe it was an early release of the 1990 Loyal RS, which was available in black, but not all RSs were turbocharged, and those that were only has a push button single range 5 speed or an 4 speed auto, the 89 black RXs were true RXs.

only made form 1990 to maybe 1992. Its a 3 door with an RX body kit. Avalible in white or black. Turbo optional. single range FT4WD only. most were non turbo. Where as the the GC8 is a WRX...the GC6/GM6 is the 2.5 RS.

Imagine comparing the WRX vs a 2.5 RS...but the 2.5 RS having an NA version fo the EJ20.
