Buddy Posted May 18, 2005 Share Posted May 18, 2005 hey you guys i have a question. whats the best way to tow my suby either wheel lift truck or flat bed truck? its a 4WD and i'm gonna need to move it because the family is relocating in about 1-2 mos. reason for towing. leaks lots of oil and dont want to risk a break down while driving to the new house. any imput would be great. Buddy Posted May 18, 2005 Author Share Posted May 18, 2005 well its a constant leak it just drips and drips and drips while idling and while its being driven it leaves an oil trail behind. and the move is no greater than 40 miles. the most is maybe 15-25 miles. hey Shawn thanks the u-haul is option 1 now i need to know which is best if i cant get a u-haul, wheel lift or flat bed. oh yeah and i forgot um... oh yeah, can i tow it with my dad's truck with all four wheels on the ground? I flat-towed an 84 Brat from San Diego, CA to Tucson, AZ without any problem.. If you are worried about it damaging your differentials you could always take out a half axle from the front and one from the back. If you do the timing belt service and replace or reseal the oil pump you could just drive it. you know what Shawn i'm not sure exactly if its the oil pump because some time ago i posted about this oil leak and some of the guys told me to replace all of the gaskets. actually i never thought of that one before i just try to poke my dad into helping me check it out. and about the recommended service, i don't have much time to take it appart and do it unless it takes less than a week cuz i'm actually packing up along with the family and the car is being packed up with all of our clothes. Buddy Posted May 18, 2005 Author Share Posted May 18, 2005 the move is no greater than 40 miles. the most is maybe 15-25 miles. about the distance we might just relocate here in Manteca. if thats the case its definitely no more than ten miles. its a town of only about 59,000 people! and i might risk it and just drive it across town. uh.....maybe not. like i said at first i don't want to run out of oil and blow my engine there's those pesky traffic lights and if i get all of them red ( now thats definitely bad luck) i could just drain the oil while idling and accelerating. Be sure to reserve it about a week in advance, and call the day before to make sure they didn't give your trailer away. They aren't the brightest bunch down there... They aren't the brightest bunch down there... when i bought my xt-6 i towed it 200 miles on a dolley i just un bolted the rear axel from the differential. also he is right u haul screwed up the mixed up the pickup point and the desination cost me an hr and a half sorting it all out Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dragonwingsubaru Posted May 19, 2005 Share Posted May 19, 2005 i wouldnt tow it with all 4 wheels on the ground unless its a manual. when i bought my 85 i had it towed 2 the house which was about 20 miles, with a regular front only type of tow truck, and had no probs from that. and when i broke my timing belt i towed it home with the hatch i had and my wife at the steering wheel for about 5 miles so you should have no probs with regular towing it unless it in an auto 4wd Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

dragonwingsubaru Posted May 21, 2005 Share Posted May 21, 2005 no you shouldnt have any probs doing a realatively short distance with a manual just pop it in neutral and your good to go. just leave it in 2wd if u can, and for leaks check out the crank seal as well which is just above the oil pump, im replaceing those on mine right now, the thing that usually takes the longest is ordering the parts and waiting 4 them.
