jxavierf
Need feedback on the best way to maintain a rust free (84 wagon) subaru while living on the east/salt coast. My current wagon is 99% rust free and I would like to keep it that way. It's been z-barted (sp?). Any suggestions???? Thanks......
heartless
wash regularly, with special attention to the wheel wells and undercarraige - use the do-it-yurself wash bays, the drive thru carwashes dont do that good a job.
thealleyboy
Wash regularly as Heartless says - if you must drive it in salt. However, that will only slow down the deterioration. The salt will still corrode weld seams, paint chips etc. between washings, and once it starts, it's very difficult to control. The worse the corrosion gets - the worse it gets - if you know what I'm saying... If you want to keep yours nice, I would park it in winter, and find a similar beater Sube for the ruff duty stuff. If the beater dies on you, you'll have an instant stash of spare parts. An old Sube that's 99% rust free? And you want to drive it in the salt????? It's just not worth the risk, IMO. Not even once. good luck, John
Sweet82
Keeping the salt off it is virtually impossible if you drive it daily. But not driving a Subaru in bad weather is just morally wrong! Regular washing of the wheel wells and undercarrage are the only real preventions you can do. Pay particular attention the the pinch seam/rocker panel area, floor board areas, fender wells and any little rock chips... I've tried rust proofing stuff on my old Subie. It may have given it a few more years but salt is tough on cars. I live in SALT LAKE CITY. Our roads are white from SALT not snow! Drive it, take care of it... and when it gets rusty, make a buggy out of it Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

My '78 4WD wagon is one of the last survivors up here because it was Zeibarted properly.A lot of companies applying it closed drain holes....bad,very bad.Just check your car over well for those. Rinse,rinse,rinse...... Good luck with it.Next year we should have a bunch of us back at Carlsile for the Import show, third weekend in May.Hopefully we all make it and get a better turn out than this year looks to be.A lot of us up this way just can't make it this year.
