Grr, again, how to get intake bolt out?

Recommended Posts

alright, i got my weber, got 3 of the studs out of the intake, but 1 of them is stuck.. i've pb blasted it to hell, heated it up (with a butane lighter) used teh biggest pair of vice grips and it still won't come out..

so here the wagon sits again, cause of ************ed up parts again.. really starting to think i got a car with some serious voodoo goin on.. i fix one thing, another breaks.. its like $50 a day in repairs to keep it running..

so any ideas on how to get it out short of cutting it off and drilling it out (i really don't wanna do that)

Pbblaster should do the trick, just keep on it and try to tighten and then loosen back and fourth. I know it sucks snaping the bolt then drilling it out might be the way out.

Is it stuck in the manifold or are the threads stuck in the block?

I had one on my RX that was packed into the manifold with rust/corrosion so tight that it twisted the head off. Then it took me about an hour to work the manifold up a 1/4" off the block... I gave up and drilled the bolt down the hole in the manifold. After the manifold was off I could thread the end of the bolt out of the block with very little effort.

Be careful drilling the harder steel bolt out of the soft aluminum manifold/block, center a small drill bit VERY well and make a pilot hole for the larger bit to follow.

Good luck

Gary

my favorite trick that has worked on a number of occassions. (easiest with two people but not bad by yourself). get a long prybar (with the V on the end is what i use). if you can get the bolt out just enough to get the prybar on it (typically my stuck bolts at least come out a bit). pry UP from underneath the head of the bolt while simultaneously backing the bolt out with your socket wrench. might not want to reuse this bolt once you're through, might be bent.

something else that has worked for me before is to screw it back down tight and then try to loosen it again.

as always, large doses of Liqued Wrench (or the aforementioned PB Blaster) work wonders. don't substitute WD-40, use the real stuff.

i had to cut one once, ended up ending my problem very quickly though i hate taking a sawzall that close to the head! but it sure works nice and takes less than a minute! you'll just need a new bolt, well worth the savings in time.

try hitting the top of the bolt with a hammer to help break it loose. it sometimes helps when they are corroded on. think of it like tapping the lid of a jar when you cant get it open. almost the same thing, just not.

Also, try tapping on the bolt WHILE you are trying to unscrew it. Put your wrench or vice grips on the bolt head and try to loosen it while you have a buddy tapping on top of the bolt head with a hammer and punch.

Damn man. I didn't install the voodoo. Sorry you're having such a time. MAPP or propane is hot enough to melt aluminum so get you a bit hotter gas. I lucked out and inherited a oxy/acet rig.

If it make you feel better, I cut my hand on the RV.

ok, after 2 hours this morning, in the rain, cussing, etc. i finally got it out..

since it was a stud there was no head on it..

i beat on it with the hammer, went to advance got a torch and got it glowing hot then took my vice grips and squeezed them together with a big set of channel locks.. was so tight is mashed the stud.. then had to wiggle the hell outa it for about 10 min, and it finally came out..

but the new carb didn't fix my run problem.. bah.. thats another thread tho..

thanks all
