Skip
Kay Nine you need a Transmission Control Unit? My guess is any 2wd 4EAT unit will work as there are no special features built into the XT6 that say a 89 2wd 4EAT GL would not have. May I be so bold as to ask, why you suspect the TCU? calebz
After you confirm that the TCU is the problem, I may be able to get my hands on a 2wd 90-91 XT6 TCU locally.
K9WAGON
The reason I think it's the tcu is because everything used to work fine then the alternater went out in a bad way and sent a large voltage spike through the system and wiped out many various components. I belive it fried the tcu . I have checked all the fuses. I bought the car not running from the person who was driving it when the alt went . Skip
K9 you still have not explained what the problem is if you did I apologize for missing it The car won't shift? Won't go into gear? What??
K9WAGON
The transmission will not shift into any gears other than 3rd and reverse. You can put the shifter into 2nd and the light for 2nd does not not come on, nor does the 1 hold light come on when I depress the button. The car starts off in 3rd gear and stays there regardless of vehicle speed. I am trying to figure out how to diagnose this since i'm fairly certain its an electrical issue . idosubaru
how about post the part number off the 2WD TCU or call subaru and ask for the part numbers of the 4WD TCU and the 2WD TCU. if they are interchangeable then i have some extra's. also - for testing you don't even need to remove the TCU. just unplug it and unplug another in it's place. no need to unbolt and rebolt just to test, just lay it on top of the other one for testing and swap if you diagnose the problem. Skip
does the "POWER" light illuminate when starting the engine? If so you may be able to pull some error codes if the TCU is not toast Did you by chance check to see if the wiring harnsess to the tranny is intact? Maybe the PO was doing some trouble shooting? K9WAGON
Nothing happens. No power light. Nothing. I unpluged the TCU and I got the same results. Now I have checked all other connections and I cant find a thing. I can get voltage through the TCU harness but I think Im looking at a bad TCU. This car had a alternator blow up on it and it fryed some of the electrical so this could be one of those things.

gtrbrat
Please see if you can get your hands on a TCU for this 89 XT6 I cant find a replacement anywhere. Your help is much appreciated Did you ever get a new TCU? I was wondering if it fixed the problem...I recently bought an XT6 with the same exact symptoms (no power light or 1st hold-down, only 3rd gear and reverse), so I'm hopeful you can tell me that the TCU is the fix. -Scott
