SPEFI head question

Recommended Posts

Ok, I don't understand everthing I know. I have this "87 SPEFI parts car. My driver is an "85 NA.

At first I was considering swapping the EFI system into my wagon. But since all my life I have been "electronicly challenged", I have changed my mind. Not only do I not have the wherwithall to pull of the swap, but then if anything goes wrong with the system, I'd prolly never be able to diagnose and fix it. Might go to a weber, might not. Regardles of that:

I am being told that the EFI EA82 has higher compression heads. So what I want to know is would I want to put those EFI heads on my NA engine? Any performance gains availiable in that? Enough gain to be worth it?

Thanks

heads shoule be the same in that regard. im the opposite, carbs baffle me, efi is easier for me becasue the computer gives clues as to whats wrong.

like i have a snowblower. the carb in it completly baffles me. i can shut the throttle vane all the way, screw in the idle fuel screw in all the way and it will still run rich (but very slowly). plus they dont work off road on steep inclines too. i really hate computer controlled carbs. Ive never had one make more power with the computer intact. i dont like the idea of a gas toilet sitting on my engine.

like heres another problem i had, another case where EFI just is easier

QUOTE

engine is a 357 ci. sbc, 0 deck height, flat tops with 2 valve reliefs, 76cc heads flat milled about .030. Last week I had a lean problem but fixed that by making sure the throttle plates in the 4 outer secondary carbs shut tight. I also plugged the idle mixture ports. I also installed 58 jets in the 2 primary carbs. When I take it for a ride everytime I push in the clutch to slow down it loads up and dies. i have to keep cleaning(reving) it out. I have the reg set at 2.5 lbs. What size jets are you guys running in the center carbs?

compression comes from the pistons and not the heads

the difference between spfi and car heads is the carb heads has egr ports on the side of the exhaust ports.

depending on emissions in your state, you can put carb heads on the spfi block to retain the egr piping system, orjust go the simpler route and out the carb intake on the spfi lo9ng block, if you would be eliminating all theat piping from the exhaust ports

Ah, thanks Miles. Now I get it.

So I'm stuck. The EFI motor in the donor car is like very tired. My NA motor in my driver runs great. Real good compression. The only issue it has is "crank walk", apparently from a worn thrust bearing. One can see the end play if you pry forward on the fly wheel. So it clacks a bit. I have no idea how long it will run like this.

I think maybe if it gives up the ghost due to this problem, I'll swap in a CCR EFI motor, and run a weber carb.

Actually, if I could talk somebody into doing the EFI conversion with/for me for a price I could afford, I would consider that swap. But from reading the conversion manual, it looks like a lot of work. A lot of hours. Probably out of my price range.

But then if my NA motor takes a dump, I'd already have the EFI installed and a CCR EFI motor would be well withing my capability.

Ah, I'm just dreaming.
